I don't know if the folks who answered that 16 is ok are from US ?? but in the UK it is 17 and I think that is probably about right , even although a younger driver is factually proven to have more accidents that someone more senior
raising the age would not prevent those young early to mid teen thugs who steal cars for joy riding continuing to cause death and destruction.
The whole age thing in the UK makes no sense whatsoever . You can legally marry and have children at 16 , but not buy cigarettes or alcohol till you are 18 . and as I already highlighted you c an drive at 17 so long as you have passed your test or have a provisional license and be accompanied by a legally qualified driver. . I would have thought that the most responsible of all these is the marriage and children aspect !! Oh and you can't vote till 18 either , its time the adult age was defined for all options as the same

Wow, this is certainly the question to ask if you want to count the population on Yahoo Answers that is under 18. All you have to do is tally up the no's. In reality for those of us with a bit of experience we should know that 16 is definitely too young for people to be given control of a half ton hunk of metal and fiberglass hurdling down the interstate at 75 miles per hour where the smallest bit of inattention could result in a horrible tragedy and cost many lives. I don't debate that some teenagers are mature enough to handle the responsibility, but I seriously doubt they compose a significant fraction of licensed drivers under 18. A lot of these kids can't handle responsibilities like homework and chores, much less driving. And while you children are getting angry, I agree with you that there are adults who shouldn't be driving either.

No. Realistically there are a number of factors of the country that persons at the instant are not waiting to stay without a automobile surprisingly rural factors. Many youngsters learn the fee of a greenback and technical skills by applying going to artwork, which they might prefer a automobile for. some faculties as an occasion, very prestigious ones are remoted interior the middle of nowhere. Many pupils use their automobiles to trip to cities to intern. additionally think of roughly it like this, if somebody gets their license at sixteen takes a protection applying direction and on no account has twist of destiny till 21 has 5 years of effective applying history. this would make coverage extra fee-effective for them and standard all of us. If all of us had to attend till 21 to get their license then all of us would pay over the precise for coverage for the 1st countless years of their 20's. as nicely, sure youthful drivers are extra services to injuries yet generally it is those that finally have been given their license and did no longer have plenty prepare. in case you better the age to 21 then many extra persons 21 - 25 would be getting into injuries.

Education, not age, should be the deciding factor.
I have found that the young drivers are NOT taught how to react around heavy trucks. They seem to think that just because they have 5 sets of brakes, that they should be able to stop on a dime and give you nine cents change.
Teach them how to share the road.
As for the youthful drivers there should be a speed limit reduction. At least till they know how to act.

No. There's no need to raise the age limit. I think car drivers should be treated the same way as bikers.
That's by restricting the size of engine you can make use of until you've either been on the road for two years or you're over twenty one.
It's been law for bikers for years, but a newly qualified driver can get out of the Corsa he or she has just passed their test in, then go out and buy the biggest, fastest motor they can afford.
There would be a hell of a lot fewer accidents if all new drivers were restricted to cars 1100cc or smaller for two years. It certainly has that effect on bikers, even if not one biker I've ever spoken to likes it.

yeah to atleast 18, then the rate of teen age drivers who are killed would go down, they are not that responsible of drivers at 16 or in Idaho 14. My daughter thought that she was a better driver then my mother and she stole her car last night I guess to try and proove that she could drive. I for one was very worried that I would find her rolled on the highway or somen , but thank God I found her a few miles out of town at a friends house. How stupid can they get? pretty stupid, but then, they know it all. don't they?

Yes, I do. I think one should have to be 18 before you can drive. I've met too teenage drivers on the road, and they scare me.

By the way, I'm 21 and people tell me I look 12 to 14 all the time.

It might be a good idea but I still find it really annoying cos the date when they are intending to change the age is right in the middle of my school year and so some of my friends will be able to drive and I will have to wait another whole year whilst they sit smug in their little cars.
At least I think that's the date. But it probably is a good idea.

I think 16 is okay, but there should be restrictions: No driving at night (unless having a work permit rider); no more that two teenagers in the car at one time; definitely no cell phones; no boom-box speakers at full volume; absolutely no alcohol! With the exception of alcohol, these restrictions can be lifted upon reaching 18 - thus 2yrs of driving experience instead of 2days, 2weeks or 2 months. Many people are older than they look. You can't judge by that.
