No, not because of spygate.... but for this simple reason.
What is the true original meaning of an * by a record.
It was add by MLB on the season HR record.. this was to indicate that the record was broken under different rules that made it easier to break.

Yes I said easier for 19-0 than was 17-0
Miami won 17 straight games in 17 straight weeks.
NE will (if they succeed) have won 16 with a week off, then another week off play 2 more then another week off.
I believe it is easier to win with the breaks.

So what is everyones take on that?????

kris - but the off time makes it easier because of the rest etc....
maybe an * just to signify that it was done under different rules that made it a different proposition

tabi- ok, maybe easier not the right word....but definately it is a totally different accomplishment and could be considered for the *, for what the * was originally intended for

I don't know that I can agree with it being easier now. The Pats are winning most of their games by a huge margin, Is that easy? No, though it does look effortless for them. Brady has been taken out in most games by the 4th quarter, and the Pats were still able to score. I am not trying to take anything away from Miami's 17-0, it is amazing but there is no way you can say the Pats don't deserve every minute of the glory of an undefeated season.
I honestly don't think they deserve an asterisk at all, and I'm sure lots of people don't agree and will give me thumbs down, but everyone has their own opinion.

*Edit: ok I understand but if it is to show it was accomplished under different rules then maybe the asterisk should just be by the record in general and not attached to a specific team, or maybe it should be considered a whole other record all together.

I feel Baltimore did a lot of holding. That's the only explanation as to why they were still in the game in the 4th quarter. If Brady had just done a QB draw or scrambled, he would've gotten the first down. On the throw in to the end zone, the Ravens guy was definitely holding. I've been watching the game on the Pats web site. There cannot be an asterisk: the NFL always says the officials are above reproach. All the teams do it, so you can't cry "spygate". Besides, the Patriot players didn't cheat. They block and tackle better [most of the time]. Not one Patriot player that I have heard of has been caught on steroids. Not one has failed the urine test. Further, Shula was on the NFL competition committee. But there is no asterisk beside the '72 Dolphins. So there you have it.

It is MUCH harder to win now. Free agency, better competition, etc.

No asterisk is needed.

EDIT: But they'll be playing 2 more regular season games, that more than makes up for the "rest". It's only 1 bye week btw.

If anything, put an asterisk next to the Dolphins in the record book, to signify they did go 16-0 in a shorter season. The team that played MORE games should never be the one that gets an asterisk.

the dowlphins played only two teams that had winning records during the regular season in 72. the combined winning percentage of their opponents that year was 40%. the patriots have beaten an 8-2 team, a 9-1 team, a 7-3 team and have two teams coming up that are 7-3. no comparison.

It is a lot harder to win now days with free agency today then it was 35yrs ago, teams now days have no 2-3 string because of it....somehow if the pats do go undefeated it will be a record that will probably will not be broke, too many things would have to happen..... Patriots would be the true dynasty team!!

If the Patriots go 19 and 0 then they had the single greatest season of all time, hands down. Still not convinced it will happen though.

Nobody deserves an asterisk * ! Not even Barry Bonds, and he comes closer than anybody.

Stealing the opposition's signs is an age-old technique, and I'd bet you'd feel differently if it had been your team doing it!

No. This isn't an off chance. It is almost a certainty. The Pats will go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl.

But thanks for getting everyones takes.

Then every record would need to have an asterisk!
