Yes.
There is a lot to do in the game and if you find yourself a good guild you can make some good friends. My guild has had some rl meets and as we are a cross european guild we now know ppl in many different countries.
Yes there is a danger of becoming obsessed - a very real danger - but you can avoid this if you limit your game play. I only let myself play for a maximum of two weekday evenings and one weekend. I still get up to 10 hours gameplay a week -40 hours a month for 8.99.

If you like that type of game, WoW is the only MMORPG to get. It is the biggest and the best.
Quests will take you from level 1 to 70 (60 without the expansion quest), and you can solo the entire time if you choose. RPGs are based on leveling and bettering your character, so if that doesn't appeal to you, I don't think any of them well.
I've been playing for almost 3 years, and it's not been boring to me. There is always something to do. You can do basic quests, you can farm for items, skill up your professions, fish (my mom loves the game and it all stemmed from learning how to fish), battle against other players, join dungeon groups, raid other cities, role play ... it's pretty endless. It actually gets better as your level increases. If you have friends who play, it's a great way to get together and chat while leveling or meeting certain challenges with people you know - or you can meet new people. With numerous races and classes to play, you've got a wide variety of things to try out. I'm still finding quests I haven't done before - and I've got quite a few 60s.
However, it's going to depend on your willpower and desire to succeed in school. I was long since graduated when it was released, and I'll be honest - I'm not sure I could have balanced school and WoW when one is so much more fun than the other.
Look at it this way - would you rather spend £8.99 for a whole month's worth of enjoyment that's there when you want it, as much as you want ... or would you rather buy one, maybe two cinema tickets and have 4 hours of fun?

NO NO NO. I played this game for about two years none stop. It was one of the best game's i had ever played and i never got bored, but... that's the problem. It eats your life away it's the most addictive game I've ever played. looking back i really wish i had spent the time on something a little more important, i even missed going to Glastonbury because of it. Since your at college i would concentrate on your education. I'm a proud gamer and understand that sometimes life can get boring and games are a good way to kill a bit of time while your waiting for something but if your going to play on something, play something that you can just muck about on for an hour or two then easily switch off. Hope this helps

From what I hear, Guild Wars is supposed to be a safer option (regarding the time you may spend online), but even then, Guild Wars (although free to play (minus the cost of the game)) is reliant on forming a party, which you'll need to spend lots of time online for.
My experience is in Guild Wars and Runescape, and I definately prefer Runescape, because of it's mix of solo play (you can play as a team if you want) and the mind shattering tedium of trying to raise cash (especially on Free Play) to such a point, I regularly take long breaks from it because I'm so fed up with being a poor b#stard.
Guild Wars is fun, better looking and very big, but I don't really enjoy the tactical element.
Plus, with the monthly subscription (Warcraft) you'll be spending a lot of money.
Perhaps, as a college student, you should consider which online game (including ones I haven't mentioned) will give you the most time to study. If they all seem to take up a lot of your time, don't play any of them.

I think that WoW in itself is an amazing game, if you can afford to give up the vast amounts of time that is required to play the game (and yes you will be spending a hell of a lot of time in Azeroth if you do buy it) then you will be perfectly happy.
The game has many appealing parts to it, for me I enjoyed playing in groups and going into different dungeons as I leveled up looking to get the best items, weapons, armor ect.
Another fun factor is of course PvP. You might not have experienced the battlegrounds yet but they certainly are one of the high points of the game for me, battling it out against the Alliance (or Horde if you chose Alliance) is always fun and seems to never get old or boring.
There is always something to be getting on with in World of Warcraft, whether it be questing, training up different professions or just mindlessly chatting to your Guild when its very late at night and you really should be asleep! :P
I think the only reason people don't like to play this game is:
1. They are stingy / poor and don't want to fork out the money to play it. Let me reassure you its very much worth it, you could spend a lot more if you actually did something like go bowling or to the cinema.
2. It eats your life away...yes, this is true if your not extremely bored and have a year or two to kill, WoW will get in the way of anything else you are doing in your life. You will find yourself coming home with one thing on your mind, you will go out less with your friends and if you are in school / college then you might do worse in your exams because of playing WoW instead of studying.
Overall I personally think you should try it but remember to try and retain a social life and also do not let WoW get in the way of your studying!

Many people have said stated their experience of the game, I included. I will simply say, looking back, I regret paying for the box as well as those months I did. Yeah a *few* fun weeks of game play is nice, but not worth my life nor money.

I say no personally. It make noooooo sense to me at all. I suggest playing runescape where you don't have to pay and it makes sense and there is alot of updates. Also on runescape there is a huuuuge enormous update coming. The update is on the new years. They said they will be spilling hints. It is suppose to be like the biggest update they ever had. Bigger than a new skill. Bigger than a new area. I can't wait.
