A friend of mine was arrested for some criminal charges. Her bail was set by a magistrate. Well we have no financial means of coming up with the money. We cannot even set up a bail hearing until after the holidays. So IF the magistrate wanted to could he get rid of her bond, thus releasing her on her own recognizance?? Any advice please

Yes the magistrate can remove the bond requirement. However this is highly unlikely.

Yes the magistrate has the authority to remove bond, and release her on a PR Bond, but that is not likely...You can speak to a Bail Bonds company and see if you can set up payment arrangements. Don't hesitate to call several bail bonds companies to see who can give you a better deal.
