Neither if it is a short hug, but it lingers a bit too long, I'll start patting.
I read somewhere once that when a person pats or rubs ones back while hugging, that it's a sign of nervousness or discomfort. Interesting how many people do it.

When I hug someone, I do not pat or rub. If I had to pick one, I would say that I probably patted someone at sometime.

To me it depends on the situation. when I hug my bf I rub, but when I hug my family I pat. Also when my best homegirl is upset I hug and rub her back. So I guess it all depends on the person you hug and the situation.

It depends on the person and the situation.
Rubbing IMO is more of a consoling hug.
