So why do they call themselves "conservatives?" They simply are not fiscal conservatives and the facts are easy to read.

There are people who have very strong opinions on both sides of the aisle. You have some who honestly believe Democrats always mess up and can't get things right. And you have some who sincerely believe the exact opposite, Republicans can't do anything right and always mess up. But the simple fact of the matter is this. There have been times when both Democrats and Republicans have done well by the economy. And other times when both haven't handled the economy so well. And made their fair share of mistakes. So there are wins and losses by both parties when it comes to their handling of the economy. Not one party has always been right, while the other has always been wrong. Sometimes, politics overshadows economics. What I mean here is that there may be a specific and appropriate economic action that needs to be taken. But politically, it may be a very tough sell. So it may not get done at all, which could hurt the economy rather than help it. Or it may be so watered-down that the effectiveness of it in the end is minimal at best. It's even possible that it may be changed in such a way that detrimental to the economy rather than helpful. For example, what if all economists (liberal and conservative) said the government needs to raise taxes by 30% to fix the economy. As a politician, is this something you really want to tell voters and vote for yourself? Well I'm sure most would say no because if they did this, they know they'll probably be booted out of office. So whether you're a Democrat or Republican lawmaker, you are most concerned about staying in office. And weigh the political realities of economic decisions. So even though raising taxes 30% is the right thing to do, politically speaking, it could be the kiss of death!

Actually, the facts show that we are most fiscally conservative when Congress is Republican-controlled and the President is a Democrat.

The reverse is a disaster, but what's even worse is a Democratically-controlled Congress with a Democrat as President - historically the worst spending combination imaginable.

If the Republicans had controlled congress during the Reagan years, they would have balanced the budget eventually. It wasn't Reagan's military spending, it was the same pork barrel spending we have today that caused the deficits every year.

Back then, the Republicans knew how to control the purse strings. Seems they've forgotten how, since then.

You are perfect example of liberal debate theory: You make a claim "Facts" you say show ...? what? What facts? You have not included any--only opinion and conjecture.
Democrats can't even spell fiscal in most parts of the country nor do the Dem's I know have clue about money---except that they think they are ENTITLED to everyone else's money!
You haven't seen bankrupt till the Dem's get in power...then we're talking RECESSION-Inlfation--HIGHER TAXES---and war and all the problems we have now. The Dems don't have a plan to fix anything but complain.

Where do you people get your facts. Even today as I write this, our economy is not bad. We still have low unemployment, and stock is doing well. But the media would have you believe we are ready to crumble. We are looking at problems over oil prices, and the housing market. But the housing market always fluctuates. Yeah, lets get a Democrat in there so we can pay 50% of our income on taxes. No thanks, I like my money!

I think you have to separate mainstream Republicans from true republicans, just like mainstream Dems from true Dems. Most Dems are not as liberal as the folks representing them for the presidential race. People like John Kerry, John Edwards, and Hillary Clinton are very far left of center. Also, I think John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and George Bush are straying left on many issues, mainly to get votes. The further right you go, i.e. libertarians, are very fiscally conservative. In my opinion, Mike Huckabee might be one of the most conservative candidates running for next year's election, but he doesn't stand much of a chance because of his lack of endorsements.

So don't generalize all conservatives by the people who are mainstream. Just like you don't want to generalize the Democratic party by the liberal frontrunners.

Each time a Republican gets in the White House, we have an a war or conflict ( Bush Sr. with the Gulf War is the exception due to UN ) that is not justifiable in any way or sense. As the rule of thumb goes, the economic disaster follows within 24 months as the debt ( from increased war spending and pork barrel projects ) are shoved down America's throat due to the "fear" factor.

Because we have a NeoCon at the Helm...which NeoCons are NOT fiscally conservative. They believe in increased spending but lower taxes....which, as a Moderate Republican, makes NO sense to me whatsoever. In fact, when I hear these NeoCons open their mouths, it literally gives me brain cramps. I just want to gouge my eye-balls out with a fork.
So, as a Moderate Republican, who is fiscally conservative, I believe in cutting taxes and slashing away at government spending. Sometimes, however, I do feel like the only one that believes that is the way to go.

There's a big difference between Republican and conservative, there's no difference between liberal democrat and liar.
Clinton damaged this country far more than Bush.

Bush has been blasted plenty for his domestic spending by Conservatives. But you cannot tell me that Democrats will be more conservative. They will just raise taxes so they can claim they balanced the budget and spend even more.
