If we have reached the so called 'tipping point' with regards to global warming, why is it gas guzzling 4x4's/SUV's are still being manufactured? I understand the economic implications if production ceased but if we really are on the edge and about to topple, shouldn't these sort of issues be on a government's agenda along with phasing out supermarket carrier bags and taxing families for for taking foreign holidays?

BmB: I own a 4x4 so I'm not trying to pick at gas guzzling drivers, but if, as you say, choice, remains the paramount issue, will we ever really have a chance to save the planet?

By the way, I don't give much of a damn either, all the gloomy predictions are set well after my lifetime, I just really want to pick holes in the government's idea of 'tackling' the problem.

the labour party just look for easy targets like the people who have to use cars, because the people who manafacture cars buy and sell our politicians on a daily basis.....same sort of thing with banks. they bail out the super rich share holders. then grab the money back by forcing the sic, the disabled and the elderly back to work. new labour are a disgrace to the people who founded the the labour party. they are cirtainly not a peoples party.

We're near the "tipping point" as far as we can tell, nature may have some more nasty surprises or nice ones also. However SUVs are just part of the problem. People focus on them because they are a symbol of the tendency to "super-size" that recent capitalism seems to have built in. Also they break the unwritten social contract with other drivers by being more likely to injure you if you are run over or crash into one. They are also intimidating and fill car parking spaces, they just seem so gross.

However the good news is that the Stern report says that fixing global warming should cost no more than 5% GDP and deliver better technologies. Roll on ELctric high speed trains, covered eco parks and recresation areas in every town. beautifully built houses that cost nothing to heat. Better recreation and entritainment so you will want to holiday at home. Durable clothes, and gadgets that will last a lifetime..... you see the problem is not the consumer, but the producer who actually would prefer that we threw everything out on a regular basis. My anxiety is that Society will not be able to contain the powerful get rich quick merchants that are already turning the world into a rubbish bin.

You know what to do, don't bother voting, vote green by spending and consuming green. Starve the rich!!!!

The 'gas-guzzlers' are still being manufactured because......

ready?
because the global warming scare is manufactured too.
It is only a ploy to grab power/money and to further the socialistic "one world government" agenda.
Remember, in the 1970's it was global cooling that was going to kill us all in 10 years.

Here is truth about global warming:

Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling.
The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water.
This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.
Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is
becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history).
As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm).
When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age.

It's been happening for millions of years.

The worrisome and brutal predictions of drastic climate effects are based on computer models, NOT CLIMATE HISTORY.
As you probably know, computer models are not the most reliable of sources, especially when used to 'predict' chaotic systems such as weather.

Global warming/cooling, AKA 'climate change':
Humans did not cause it.
Humans cannot stop it.

The sea produces more co2 than anything else on earth but you can't tax it.Consider this dinosaurs were running around 260 million years ago, they died out 65 million years ago man has been on this ever changing planet 55 thousand years this planet has warmed up and cooled down in that time constantly the $hit they keep coming out with about co2 is mostly un- proven at least nine yes nine of the "facts" in the Al Gore film were incorrect. If you spout $hit long enough people start believing eg.Nazism,Religion and climate control

I wouldn't worry about cars the production of cement causes twice as much pollution in a year as all the airplanes in the sky put together...,, But to answer your actual question .. SUV an 4x4's are still made because we have a choice if we want to pay more money an more tax an higher running cost too drive an suv than we can its our choice it our money we earned it so we decided how to spend it .. Put the mean thing here is that we have the choice!!!

The US has a free market economy, meaning that the production of these vehicles will be allowed no matter what. It is up to the public to purchase more fuel efficient vehicles and once that happens, production will decline and taper off.

Not all purchases of SUVs and 4x4's are unnecessary. I have a 4x4 and use it for work often.

However a soccer mom dropping the kids off at school doesn't need one, nor does the average commuter. Once gas prices hit $4/gallon and it costs $125 per week to fill one up, purchases of these vehicles will taper off.

The govt is NOT here to plan every minute of every day, in what you drive and for how long. There ARE minimum MPG standards that manufacturers must abide by though.

Remember.... Al Gore's private circa 1972 gas guzzling Learjet wastes more fuel and poisons the air more in ONE trip to visit Oprah than the life time of any one car!

If global warming is true, how governments react would be quite different. However, it is not true, and the political agenda of those people pushing this hoax is evident. The Wacko Environmentalist, Green Party, Democrat Party (US), Most Socialist and Communist are pushing this agenda for the same goal: massive tax increases, massive increase in the size and scope of government, decrease in personal freedoms, individual liberties, and private property rights.

Let's go a little further, why are we even continuing to manufacture cars at all. Surely if the planet's about to be destroyed we could all just walk to prevent global warming.

20 years from now people will be laughing at how many gullible people bought into the global warming scare.

vehicles burn fossil fuels, molecules specifically shaped of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) that, whilst burned and oxidized (O), variety carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour (H2O). As carbon dioxide has an choppy distribution of electrons whilst it effective factors vibrational momentum it fairly is a greenhouse gasoline. Greenhouse gases have the skill to take in a re-radiate infrared radiation between 4 micrometers and a hundred micrometers, or the warmth capability given off with the aid of the planet's floor. whilst this happens the molecule absorbs, effective factors kinetic capability, then re-releases that capability in a random course. that's what retains the exterior of the planet livable. needless to say as you develop the quantity of CO2 in the ambience the quantity of infrared radiation able to be trapped with the aid of using this result will develop. satellite tv for pc measurements coach this is going on. different measurements coach CO2 concentration is increasing with the aid of variety of 2ppm consistent with year, that's comparable to approximately 15gt. Human emissions of CO2 because of burning of fossil fuels quantity to over 30gt. without using fossil gasoline powered vehicles or capability vegetation the quantity of unnatural emissions emitted with the aid of people could be decrease than what the ambience is presently increasing with the aid of. Richie throws some numbers out to make it appear like our contribution is small. that's no longer.
