Every baby is different when it comes to beginning solids. The current recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics is only breast milk or formula for the first 6 months. However, this is the general guideline and an average. Babies don't read the books, but most are ready sometime between 4-7 months to eat solid foods. Not even all babies eat cereal first. There are some good reasons to consider infant rice cereal as baby's first food, such as little risk of food reaction, it's easily digested causing little stomach upset, and it is iron fortified. Some people like to start with bananas or applesauce. Newborns diagnosed with Acid Reflux may be given infant rice cereal in their bottle to help with the excessive spitting. Most pediatricians will OK beginning solids, for other than medical reasons, sometime around 4-6 months. Instead of age, it can be better to check baby's signs for being ready to eat from a spoon. If he has good head control, seems interested in others eating by watching a spoon go by or reaching for it as you eat, and seems to be losing his tongue thrust reflex, then he may be ready to try a spoon. If he repeatedly pushes the spoon and the food on it out of his mouth with his tongue, then his tongue thrust reflex (necessary for properly nursing or sucking from a bottle) is still pretty strong and you may want to wait a couple weeks and try again.

I recollect the monster cereals. Count Chocula, Boo Berry (blueberry), and Frankenberry (strawberry). I cherished the ads too... Actually I consider I noticed the Count Chocula approximately a 12 months in the past within the grocery retailer. I've incorporated a hyperlink that suggests a picutre of the historic monster team practically on the backside of the web page.

I wouldn't give your infant any cereal before 4 months. Six months is now the recommended guideline for solids. Some people will tell you they gave it to their infants earlier with no adverse affects... but as mentioned in an earlier post, better late than early. Best of luck!

You can start using rice cereal around 4-5 months. I have a one year old who will eat some cereal (Cheerios) dry. Better too late than too early, though!

I started giving my son infant cereal when he was 3 months old. You know your baby best, and you'll be able to tell when their ready.

We started around 4.5 months, but you should ask your pediatrician. They say 6 months is the optimum time.
