I know knowledge is power, but what of those who choose to be uneducated? Any cures? Can we send them to "Ignorance is Bliss" Island?

Unfortunately, we are products of our own environment. Many live their entire life without a need for understanding or without the adequate encouragement to combat ignorance.

I would like to send all ignorance to "Ignorance is Bliss" Island; however, doing so would be unfair to those who've never had a chance. Instead, we need to remove social barriers placed on education and encourage further understanding through accepting the ignorance and combating that ignorance in an effective manner. Here's an idea, socialized education free to everyone and funded by the wealthiest amongst us.

Ignorance is less likely a choice; it's more likely a by-product of environment. The ignorance present that allowed the Salem Witchcraft Trials to take place wasn't a choice, but universally embedded within Puritan culture.

To combat such ignorance, you must begin with the youngest members of a culture. Gett'em while they're young! Scrap No Child Left Behind and completely revise the goals of public education's curriculum. Wow! This kinda makes me sound like an elitist, which I'm not.

Ignorance isn't an illness. It doesn't require a cure. If what you know suffices, if it's all you've found need for, then the truly vast expanse of things you don't know, that hyper-pile of irrelevant ignorances is . . . irrelevant. Didn't you read C. S. Peirce? "On fixation of belief?" Ah! Well, of course you did not! You didn't need to know his view then, and you probably still have no great need for it. You are not diseased. You are not handicapped. You are not wanting for that. You are merely ignorant of that particular tidbit, along with about five and a half billion other people currently living.* And don't let it bug you in the least; you can live for the rest of your life without another word on the matter. Still, it might have shed a little light on this question for you, and on some of the answers.

Being ignorant is a choice which unfortunately has no one cure. Just like smoking or a drug addiction the ignorant person must choose not to be ignorant anymore, a difficult prospect when you realize that the ignorant don't think or think that they are wrong.

One way is to embarrass the ignorant into understanding. This is at times cruel, or depending upon ones lack of social etiquette quite fun. This takes the person out of their state and makes them want to prove the person wrong, thus educating them.

Another way is a shovel. Most understand a shovel to the face.

It's funny how people relate ignorance to a lack of education or how little someone knows.
People who do that are disgustingly ignorant themselves.

Ignorance is a subconscious/slightly conscious decision. An ignorant person is simply someone who doesn't give a damn because they know getting worked up over a problem that they have no control over is just pointless. Knowledge is nothing more than a bunch of worked out problems from the past and yet the more problems you know the more you try to fix. The irony is that fixing problems only redirects them into new means. Like your computer for example or automobiles or pretty much anything of our modern era.

We as a species failed the perfect means of existence the moment we stepped aside from nature and tried to "better" ourselves with technology.

Your right "knowledge is power" POWER to screw up the planet we live on.

The cure for ignorance is simple:
Those who claim to be well informed or un-ignorant and wise need to step off their high horse down onto their soap box then step again from their soap box to the earth and get over the fact that ultimatley
"Knowledge doesn't mean $H!T"

I'd much rather be an ignorant giver
than an educated sophistcated taker

The definition of "ignorance" is "lack of knowledge of a particular subject." The cure for it is knowledge of it.
