Ibuprofen works really well for quick relief.
Also, try evening primrose oil caplets. I find that by taking them a day before through the first couple of days of my period, my symptoms are alleviated (and I often have no cramps at all). It might even help if you take it now. You can buy evening primrose oil in caplets at most drug stores (in the vitamin section) and at costco and some health food stores.
Avoid caffeine (in case you weren't aware, chocolate also has caffeine in it, so it could actually make your symptoms worse).
Go for a brisk walk -- the exercise will get your natural endorphins going.
I hope you feel better!

2 Pamprin work--but extra strength for me don't work as well as the regular strength for some reason. It also works better if you put something in your stomach prior to taking the Pamprin.
Don't drink caffeine & exercise on a regular basis
I'm not trying to sound gross, but one of several things that we were advised to do during our cycle when I was a gymnast and had to perform was to take a warm bath and use something similar to those applicators used to insert vaginal cream and use it in the bath to extract during this time. I suppose those douche applicators could be used also (?) This does decrease one's cycle time and pain and cramping that goes with it.

2 to 4 advil, and 1 aleve. Try to make at least two of the advil the liquigel kind. If you weren't going to work, I'd suggest a shot of strong liquor, as well.
