just tell me which word do i have to put in this text


louis called them hamburger because he was given the recipe by sailors from hamburg in germany.
hamburgers--------------------------(become) a favourite in america in the early part of the 20th century. Their popularity grew even more after the second world war


do i have to put HAVE BECOME OR BECAME???

Became.

Because you are talking about something that happened in the past and is already over. if you were talking about they have become the favorite over the past few years (including now), then you would use "have become."

"Became," because you are talking about the past in that particular sentence.

If you were talking about the time leading up from Louis' day to, and including, the present day, then the sentence would be "hamburgers have become a favorite in America."

Neither, the correct english is HAD BECOME, because you are using the past tense, ie: they got popular back then in the 20th century, if the statement was to say that they are popular NOW, you would use 'have become'.
