Molten magma comes from the melting of rocks into a liquid (this the magma) from within the Earth. The heat that melts the rocks can be from a couple of factors: the depth of the rock at the time (the deeper it is, the hotter it is) and from friction (common at subduction zones) as slabs of tectonic plates slide past one another. All minerals have a melting point (some different than others) which is why we have partial melting sometimes since not all of the rock melts. If all of the rock melts, you get magma that builds in a chamber called the magma chamber. The melting continues until there is too much pressure for the chamber to hold it and it erupts through an already formed volcano or a fissure. After it hits the surface, the name changes from magma to lava and immediately starts cooling.
