If she's wearing make-up, can I automatically assume she's insecure and has low self-esteem?

I sat and thought this one out. I am 45 and rarely wear makeup. Trying to be honest with myself, I wondered why I put on makeup when I do. I put it on to improve my appearance, cover a flaw...
While you can't judge the level of insecurity, I think you can safely assume that wearing makeup denotes it on some level. True, you could be wearing it for work or social purposes, because others judge by appearance, (no matter how hard one tries, it is almost inevitable) it nonetheless means that you are changing the appearance of your face to suit the opinion of others. To measure the true extent of insecurity, you'd have to use more than one "ruler". Maybe you should ask how many different things can help one judge the amount of insecurity another person is dealing with.

No. That is the same thing as saying that if a girl or a guy styles their hair, they have low self esteem. Or, if you brush your teeth you are insecure.

Here is the flip side to things...If a guy wears nice clothes, has a nice car, and a good job can I automatically assume that he is making up for his "short comings"?

Haha. That would be about 90% if women. Make-up has almost nothing to do with self esteem. In fact, I think someone who has self esteem issues might not bother to wear make-up. Some men wear make-up as well so I wouldn't just assume things like that.

That is total nonsense. I wear make-up because I like it. And some days I don't wear any. It's just personal preference.

However, if she refuses to leave the house without doing her face, then she probably has self-esteem issues.

No some women just prefer to be natural. But there are others that just love to do the girlie girl thing why would you think that makes her insecure? Where did you hear this myth...I myself love makeup and have been loving it since I was little I would steal my moms lipstick...that didn't mean I had low self esteem.

no! she might just want to look good, impress people, and waste her money..haha. not all women are insecure when they wear makeup. There is nothing wrong with a little mascara or lip gloss. Now, if they wear a lot of eyeliner, black eyeshadow, and are constantly wearing it; EVEN when no one will see them, then yes, they probably have some self-esteem issues. But no, not all women are insecure who wear makeup, it just matters WHAT makeup.

NO, So many woman wear make-up because of Skin flaws maybe it makes them feel better about themselves or they like to accent facial features but not insecure! I don't wear make up because I think I am ugly I just like to! I have no problem leaving the house with out a touch of it either! I am sure that is the case with some women though!

no, because when i wear make-up i use it to enhance the look i want for my face. If i want to look natural i barely use any, maybe just a lip gloss to moisturize my lips. Think about it, you can't do a dramatic smokey look (that matches with what you're wearing) with out make up or without putting anything on your face.
