Drink a glass right after you're done breastfeeding so by the time of the next feeding it will/should be out of your system.

So many clueless people out there.

YES.....you CAN have a drink even if you are breastfeeding. You just have to be responsible about how you time it and how much you drink.

The AAP has classified alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”

Thomas Hale, author of "Medications & Mother's Milk" suggests you just wait 2 hours after each drink to nurse again.

A good general rule of thumb is actually, "if your head is clear, your milk is too" or "if you're sober enough to drive, you're sober enough to nurse." Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk.

There is NO NEED to "pump and dump" your milk after drinking. This does NOTHING to eliminate alcohol from your milk. Alcohol leaves your milk in the same way it leaves your bloodstream. The ONLY reason you might "pump and dump" would be if you got engorged and needed to do so for your own comfort. (So you can avoid this problem by nursing or pumping immediately prior to having your glass of champagne.)

There are a few good answers on here. If you feed your baby and then drink immediately you should be alright by the time your baby is hungry again. If you're still tipsy at that time, THEN you should feed the baby some pumped milk, but IMHO if you're too drunk to feed your baby 2-3 hours later, you're too drunk to be taking care of your baby in the first place!

You can have an alcohoic beverage and caffeine. Rule of thumb is you have to wait 2 hours for every alcoholic drink and 1 hour for every caffeine drink. I ended up breastfeeding then haveing a drink, then when my little one ate 3 hours later, I used pumped milk (from earlier) and picked up on the next feeding. That way there was at least 5 hours after alcohol.

Do additional research. I read the other responses and some of them are absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, it is fine. Just drink after your done nursing, the alcohol should be out of your milk by the next feed. No need to pump and dump, thats a myth.

"In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels."

It is recommended that you avoid drinking 2-3 hours before nursing. I personally waited 2 hours when I was breastfeeding and there was no affect on my son. Of course I asked my baby's pediatrician before hand to get his okay.

Make sure you're not intoxicated though or you may have to pump and dump before you feed again.

Good luck.

If you have a glass just after you've finished breastfeeding him it will be out of your system by the next time you feed.

geez i cannot believe the morons in here

anyways......YES you can have a drink!

alcohol moves in and out of the breasts just like it does in your blood.....your body will metabolize the alcohol which peaks in your system in about 30 minutes after the drink but depending on food consumed, body fat, weight and so on

go ahead and have a glass of champagne and enjoy it...your baby will be fine

Sure do a little Meth too while your at it. Seriously, I don't think its a good idea. Why take any chances on harming your little precious gift. I'm sure some have done it before and they'll say that nothing happened and maybe not - but why risk it? If you need to relax or something take you a long hot bath with some soothing music.

soon to be is right...drink a glass right after nursing and by the time you nurse again, things should be fine.
Alternately, if you store breastmilk, you can 'pump n dump'...feed baby by bottle with stored milk while pumping off the scheduled feeding that is alcoholized.
