3p - 1 = 5(p - 1) - 2(7 - 2p)

Would the answer be 3, 0, -9, or -10?

I keep getting a wrong answer!

Start by distributing the values through the parentheses:
3p - 1 = (5p - 5) - (14 - 4p)

Now watch out for the minus sign at the end which will make it 4p. This is equivalent to:
3p - 1 = 5p - 5 - 14 + 4p

Now group like terms on the right:
3p - 1 = 9p - 19

Next subtract 3p from both sides:
-1 = 6p - 19

And add 19 to both sides:
18 = 6p

Finally divide by 6 on both sides:
p = 3

You could check this by plugging 3 in for p in the original equation.

3(3) - 1 =? 5(3 - 1) - 2(7 - 2(3))
9 - 1 =? 5(2) - 2(7 - 6)
9 - 1 =? 10 - 2(1)
9 - 1 =? 10 - 2
8 = 8 <-- check

So p = 3 is the correct answer.

ok i help you,

3p - 1 = 5(p - 1) - 2(7 - 2p)

solution:

5(p - 1) = 5p - 5

2(7 - 2p) = 14 -4p

3p - 1 = 5p - 5 - ( 14 - 4p)

3p - 1 = 5p -5 -14 + 4p

combined like terms,

-1 +5 +14 = 5p + 4p - 3p

simplify it,

18 = 6p

solve for p,

18 / 6 = 6p / 6

p = 3..is the answer

3p - 1 = 5p - 5 -14 + 4p

3p - 1 = 9p -19

18 = 6p

3 = p
