I become as one of them and remember my own inconsolable fears as a child. I let the weeping child know it is alright to cry, someone is here to hug them, no matter how long it takes for consolation
Have a Grandchild whose parents got divorced when he was 5. He threw awful temper tantrums and cried/screamed. Asked him into my arms and what made him so upset.
He was afraid of not seeing his Dad again and since his Dad had moved to a new apartment, the child didn't have a new physical memory of where Dad lived.
I told if my husband or I had to take him ourselves to see his Dad, we would.
We hugged a long time. He's not thrown a temper tantrum since then. Now he's 11 and we have a very close relationship with him.

I am myself, the comfortable warm safe person who won't lie and doesn't hurt who gives the force field blankets.
Then I become the story teller, of when I felt the same way, with an ending that is most human and understanding, the story that makes me look very silly and then we laugh at my misfortune. It does not heal the first time but the next time we can relate so much better.

I become a mom and I love them, try to calm their fears and say a little prayer for them. On the other hand, if a child is simply "throwing a fit"...that calls for a different type of attention.
