Hi Sheila-use an internal thermometer for the tank, do not rely on a sticky one on the outside alone as it will not give an accurate reading if the ambient room temperature fluctuates daily.

Goldfish can survive in a wide range of temperatures from tropical conditions such as Asia where they originated from to overwintering in garden ponds in sub zero conditions. Talking Fahrenheit-ideally the mid 70s is ideal but 68 to 80 is acceptable. They do not need heaters & ambient room temperature generally falls around this 68 to 80 region.

Get a reading of the temperature of the water in the tank. The goldfish is cold blooded. It does not generate its own body heat. It relies on the temperature of its surroundings.

Buy a fish tank thermometer and the tank itself should read somewhere in between 60-68 no heater is necessary for these guys just make sure you clean you tank every 6 weeks if you have a larger tank and a filter which you should have any way. If its a small tank just change the water like every other week or so. I used to work at petco in the fish dept so I know the ropes of all these fishies. It was alot of work cleaning and maintaining but it was worth it seeing the fish thrive in clean and healthy envirnoments.
