Lack of compassion
The consequences of what is done hasn't been generally understood till very recent times.
The profit for profit motive has brutalized and desensitized people. This applies in all spheres of conduct.. familiarity breeds contempt
The mindset was understandable when it was a matter of survival when the motive and mindset was on need and not avarice.
You show the answer when you so wisely reduce your references to the basic compassion as evoked in the ill treatment of our fellow animals.
There is no compassionate effective leadership only a universal contempt for our wonderful planet.,our gift from God

Because maybe people don't always see the bigger picture. And sometimes its for survival. But, you can change things by doing your part, one person, one thing at a time (like recycling), and carry the positive messages forward to the next person whenever and whereever you can to counter act the destructive forces. It starts with awareness and then we choose to either do something or nothing. You may be the person that can make a real Big difference but small ones adds up too.

well, you can ask your parents, because the house they bought has wood probably from trees that were cut down. your shoes are probably some of leather. there is demand. you have been walking on carpet much of your life, bought by your parents or the school or the hotel where you are. these things happen because there is a demand. people can support their families by selling these resources. people chop things down not for fun but because they need the money or the warmth or the cooking energy or the land to grow crops. learn more. look deeper. it's human needs that drive these things. and if you eat meat then you are creating the demand for animals to be killed. who buys the meat for you? who sells it to mcdonald's or the grocery store? follow the chain back. you create the demand for animals to be killed if you eat meat.

Money. In some countries, some people literally don't have a pot to piss in. To them, it's more important to feed their families than save a leopard, or whatever. You only have time to sit back and feel sorry for trees and animals when you have enough to eat. It's sad, but that's the way it is.

We use all the products. The problem is not replacing them. It "costs money".
If the value of having plenty of trees and clean air/water was greater as the value of Nate Clements' contract as he knocks down passes for the San Francisco Forty-Niners, we'd be able to see it more clearly.
Uh, wait a second....

We are 'destroying' the world. The world is not destroyed. Plus, slowly but surely we are learning from our mistakes, and people are creating new ways to manufacture products without harming the environment. Be patient, I understand where you're coming from.

greed and selfishness play a part, but it mostly because we don't appreciate it. We don't work the land like we used to. If we had to grow our own veggies, kill our own meat, create our own materials... we would appreciate the land much more. Just like a teenager who doesn't appreciate a car bought FOR him... he appreciates the one HE has to buy.

Comfort and joy. Humans are way more important than any of God's other creation. BTW Shouldn't you be out hugging a tree?
