I'm 13 and I LOVE animals!!!!!!!! I always wanted to volunteer at
a animal shelter. Am I old enough? I have a friend that said you can volunteer when you're 13 and up, is that true? I live in Livermore, are there any animal shelters close to where I live? Thanks everybody!!!

Most counties have some type of animal control facility. Also check for SPCA places or rescues. They usually are very appreciative of someone to help socialize the animals, clean the cages, etc. Remember, it's not all going to be pretty. I love animals too, but at a shelter you'll see abused or neglected ones, and when they run out of room, some have to be killed to make room for the others coming in. It will be great for you to see how it all works, so congrats on wanting to make the world a better place!

For all you human beings asserting NO, i think of your questioning approximately how the undesirable lil animals get killed for no reason. My husband works for animal centers and that i understand what hazards there are. How might you experience if a rabid dogs growls and tries to bites you and chases you? Or a feral cat that scratches and bites you till you BLEED. OR the ill little kittens that are going to have a loooong drawn out dying. i'm involved by the killing of those animals by way of fact it makes the accepted public AND different animals safer! And no I dont believe them killing animals after a week yet that for the period of straightforward terms occurs at FEW animal shelters interior the country. What else might you do with the overpopulated animals? they say there is 7 dogs for a million human...thats the rationalization actual everyone could spay or neuter their dogs and cats. so that they dont have un needed placed downs.

Check with local shelters and with local vets. You can dog walk, clean stalls, learn to give proper baths, do some grooming and probably more. If you find someone who will let you volunteer remember that is just like a JOB. Tell them when you can come and be sure you are there on time and properly dressed for the job. If you can't make it be sure to call as soon as you can.

Each shelter will have different rules.. If they allow you at 13, it's probably only with a parent along with.. Shelters often make their rules based on what kind of insurance coverage they can get, so, if they don't let you yet, it's not because they're trying to be mean.. I started volunteering when I was 14 along with my mom.. You might be able to find one online by looking by zipcode at petfinder.com if you live in the US or Canada..

most animal shelters are either 16 or 18 to volounteer. Unless you have a parent or some sort of supervisor over you it should be OK. try talking to the animal shelter you want to work at. do a google search in your area for animal shelters or maybe even a vet clinic cleaning out pens, or letting animals out. good luck and hope you can lots of info =]

I worked at DC Animal Shelter and you have to be at least 16. Its also the same age you can start working as a kennel assistant at a animal hospital.
