100 means that every second of time, up to 100 megabits of data move through your network. Older networks used like10baseT could only move up to 10 megabits per second. Just think of it as have a water hose and filling a pool. then take 10 water hoses bundled and see how much faster the water fills the pool.

The number in front is always the throughput. 100BASE-T would be 100Mbps. 10BASE would obviously be 10Mbps ext..
