John played guitar, piano, harmonica and sang lead. Paul played bass guitar, piano and sang lead. George played lead guitar and sang back-up harmony. Ringo played drums and sang back-up harmony. Both Ringo and George sang a couple of lead songs but Paul and John sang and wrote almost all the songs.

Well, your friend never actually spent a great deal of TIME listening to ANY of the Beatles - especially after they split and each did their own music AND worked with numerous other highly skilled professional musicians. I literally grew up with the Beatles - my Dad bringing home their first album for me when I was 6. Everyone in my family plays at least one instrument, my Grandfather was a concert pianist. We cannot tolerate listening to "bad" or "half ***" musicians. Guaranteed IF the Beatles were "OK" musicians, my Dad wouldn't have DARED bring it in the house. Tell your friend the Monkees are no longer together....

George Harrison played the lead guitar. Paul McCartney played bass. John Lennon played rhythm guitar. Ringo Starr was the drummer.
All of them could play all the instruments and McCartney and Lennon in particular played keyboards on many of their songs. Occasionally, they switched up instruments, but the above was the general configuration.
Harrison was truly the musical genius of the bunch, though. His expertise in nearly all the stringed instruments (including the sitar and mandolin) is still practically unheard of in pop music. In fact, he was instrumental in Eric Clapton's growth as a musician.

Lol, maybe if you put them against what has evolved from their guitar skills, they'd have a fight. MA: I Need You.

Some answers have some information a bit incorrect.
John- mainly rhythm guitar, but played lead on "Get Back" among others. Played organ on "We can Work it Out" among others. Played bass on "Hey Jude".
Paul- mainly bass, but played guitar a lot "Yesterday" among others. Played drums on "Back in the USSR" among others. Played piano on "Let it Be" among others.
George- mainly lead guitar, but played sitar on "Norwegian Wood" among others. He plays ukelele on the Anthology DVD.
Ringo- drums & percussion.
Guest players included Billy Preston (Let it Be, Get Back, etc), Eric Clapton (While my Guitar Gently Weeps), George Martin (piano on "In My Life") and many strings, horns, and Indian musicians.
