Apples inparticular

My husband made me a piece of 2x4 wood, and hammered a galvanized nail through it.
We push the apple the whole way through.
The skin is pierced on top by the nail so the birds can start eating the fruit right away.
We use the same piece of wood in the Spring for the Baltimore Orioles, only we put an orange through the nail
My husband screwed an eye(as in hook and eye) on the end of the board, opposite the end with the nail. That's the end we hang on the tree with a hanger. Makes it more of a challenge for the squirrels to get at the fruit.

We have an area in our garden that is specifically for the wild birds and usually we either just put apples on the soil, attach them to the post of the bird table or sew some garden twine right through the middle and hang them. After fruit has been out for a day or so if the birds haven't eaten all of it, bugs crawl in and have their fill, along comes the birds and have an apple and bug treat! We put mealworms out too for the Robins at this time of year....they love 'em! With some fruit halve them and scoop some of the fruit out and mix with suet, chopped bacon rinds and the fat from the Sunday roast, put into a netting bag (the type that some fruit or onions come in) and tie at the top, hang out in your garden and see what turns up for the feast!

You can buy cute apple thingies, which clamps the apple and allows the bird to eat it all. You leave the apple intact, as they like the peelings, seeds and everything else. What they don't want they spit out. Or you can just lay one around, or tie one to a tree. Remember, if a bird finds an apple from someone's picnic, they don't take the time to peel it, hang it or whatever. They just enjoy. Keep it simple, and they will love the treat. A favorite is to cut it in half and scoop out a little and put back in with peanut butter. They love p-nut butter. I think I'm a bird, because I also love apples and p-nut butter. Happy Thanksgiving.

I cut it in half and nail it to a fence post. I have also put it in a suet container. When I had apple trees the birds would just eat it while hanging on the tree or off the ground, I didn't do anything.

I actually have three bird feeders in my yard and I keep my local birdies well supplied with bird seed. I love my pretty little feathered friends. Since I live near the gulf I also have big birds that stop for a visit once in awhile but they don't fit on the bird feeders. Lol ( Cranes, egrets, etc)

I cut the apple into about 8 pieces and put them on the porch. The cardinals seem to like them a lot.

We buy special seeds. I think the birdies like the apples while they are still on the tree.

Just put it where they can get to it, they will tear it apart in bite sizes that they want. Maybe cut it in half is all.
