Osama is from Saudi Arabia, and he was angry at the US because of its influence on his country. He wanted us out.
Saudi Arabia is a monarchy, not a democracy, and the ruling Saudi's can do whatever they like, even if the people (many of whom are fundamentalist Muslims) don't like it.
The Saudi rulers (but not the population) have a very close & friendly relation with the U.S. The Saudi rulers keep buying our jets, doing things that are Western, and letting us maintain a military base there, etc. The common people don't like this.
Osama saw himself as the person who could fix this problem by forcing the USA out, allowing Saudi Arabia to be more independent & Muslim.
The single goal of the 9/11 attacks: To force the USA to leave Saudi Arabia alone.
The actual hijackers, under his command, bought into this goal (most were from Saudi Arabia).
All members most likely felt the attack was a "holy war" & therefore they would be rewarded in heaven.

Osama Bin Laden in one of his videotapes said specifically about 9/11, "Terrorism against America deserves to be praised because it was a response to injustice, aimed at forcing America to stop its support for Israel, which kills our people." (link 1)
He had previously declared a holy war against America - specifically including civilians - a number of times for their interference in the Middle East. Even when America was supporting him militarily, it was to drive 'invaders' out, though back then it was to force the Soviet Union out of Afghanistan. (link 2)

All I have been able to come up with is this--> It is a mentality that most people cannot begin to understand. In a way I guess you could say brain washing. But you would have to mentally unstable to begin with to think that #1 killing innocent people is something that your religion not only promotes but demands. You see, one of the things these people are taught is not to question the muslem religion. So all they get is the "opinion" of those teaching it.Some of those are some real bad people. Those who dare question it DIE! What kills me is that they have no problem with having there own people kill themselves. That in itself is insane. I mean come on could you imagine anyone in the USA being told to strap on explosives and blow up innocent people? (He'd be dead before he finished telling about it). OH and then there's the ever popular "72 VIRGINS" awaiting your dumb *** in heaven.Ya have to be a little stupid to believe that.I mean whats in it for the muslem women? Standing in a big ol line just to give it up to some sweaty dumbass guy who was stupid enough to kill himself. ---{Sorry for the rant. But it pisses me off to think all these people will never stop killing damn good people and no matter what we do they will not stop...unless we kill them first<--sucks but it's true.

Simple as it may seem and unable to actually ask them why, I would assume they did it because they didn't think they had any choice. Why else would you kill someone you do not even know.

The Highjackers were doing their job. It was a suicide mission. That was their only reason.
The purpose behind it belongs to the "fearless leaders".
