Go to one of the craft sites[I use Joann >com] On the left side of the screen there are subjects, choose yarns and then it will take you to a site that you can pick out the mfg. of the yarn and show the yarns and price and you can figure it out as we are not sure what kind of yarn you will want to use.

The pattern calls for 12 pieces, 1.5 times the length of the final project. This would probably be 1-2 balls of wool, depending on which brand you choose. A normal scarf would probably be 6 feet long so each length would need to be 9 feet long - multiply this by the 12 pieces you need for the scarf and you have 108 feet. When purchasing your yarn, make sure that there are a total of at least 108 feet of length.
The most inexpensive Chunky yarn is Bernat at approximately 2.50 a ball. This is probably not the most ideal yarn for this project though unless you combine it with Boa (approx 3.50 a ball) which is an eyelash style wool. To do that you would need 12 lengths of both yarns and put one strand of each together but use them as if they were one strand. This would only require 1-2 balls of each for a cost of less than $10.
Or you could use a heavier yarn such as Lion Brand but the cost would go up to approx $5-7 per ball. Just remember to make sure to check the length of the yarn on the ball so you don't short change yourself.

first off it say 1 1/2 times the length of the scarf, so the first question is how long to you want your scarf. according to the pattern they have 140 inch pieces. they used 12 pieces to make a 86 inch scarf which is 7 foot scarf.
my math says that you will need 46 yards of yarn. I hope that you have fun with this scarf.

If you think it is a cute thing to make, then it is cute. You don't need us to tell you that. It does look like it would be fun to make. Jo-Ann fabrics has bulky yarns, starting at about $2.00 a skein. You would need 47 yards or 43 meters of yarn.

As much as I love knitting, I think this scarf would be cuter and more useful if it were made of colorful strips of polar fleece. Probably a yard of fabric would do it. Cut it into strips and use it as you would the yarn. You can probably buy a yard of pretty, colorful print polar fleece for $3-$5 dollars.

Reminds me of macrame. It's pretty cool. I'd stay away from fuzzy or chenile type yarns. You could even use finer weight yarn and multiply the strands so you tie 2-3 strands together as one, you can get creative with colorways.
