It was new, the first of it's kind. Saw was a new form of the slasher movie, it was popular. American Idol was new, it was popular. When something is presented and it is new and different and good, it is grabbed up and becomes popular. When Night of the Living Dead first came out, people were grossed out tremendously, there were calls for it to be banned. Almost anything in the past can be looked upon as old fashioned, slow, dumb, stupid. People in the future will look at the things you think are really cool, the same way.

As others have said, you really had to be a kid growing up in the late 70s, early 80s to get it I suppose. I was 7 when I saw the first one and it was amazing. We take sci-fi and fantasy movies for granted now, but at the time there was nothing like it.
There is also the whole toy and marketing thing which drove on the craze. Everyone I knew collected Star Wars figures or had a toy lightsabre. At the time there had never been anything like the level of marketing for such a film. You could buy Star Wars everything! ( I thought the latest movies took this way too far though. Phantom Menance to me seemed like a long trailer for toys and video games)

Even by today's standards, the original trilogy are amazing movies. Slow and boring? Stupid characters? Compared to the prequel films, the characters are masterful. I suggest you watch them again.
The reason they were so popular is that 1977 (the year of A New Hope) marked the beginning of a new era of movie-making. Technological advances permitted the creation of wholly fictional worlds, Hollywood was investing a lot of money into making blockbuster films, and people were returning to the theatre (after nearly three decades of declining audiences). The new product was exciting, mostly because of the repealing of censorship rules.
I'll say this: always admire a film in terms of the period in which it was made. Star Wars was a solid decade and a half ahead of its time, rivalled only by the release of Terminator 2 or perhaps even as late as The Matrix in terms of special effects.
If it wasn't for Star Wars, you wouldn't have most of the action films you see today.

Greetings Exulted one. The reason why there was a Star Wars craze in the 1980's was because no one had seen the type of graphics used in a movie before, that were used in the Star Wars movies. Besides the fact that the first movie, Episode IV, came out in 1977.

Oh dear oh dear! Harry Potter is the new Star Wars - in the next decade there will be another film phenonomen! The original films, ie A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi are classics. The newer films have more technology but none of the romance, none of the pure passion.

I was seven years old when Star Wars came out, and I was blown away. I'd never seen anything like it. Millions of other kids felt the same way.
By the way, find a dictionary and look up "sequel" and "prequel", find out what the words actually mean

The original craze was brought on by the original versions of the original movies. Seeing them in a altered form has altered the perception the movies recieved in their original form, as you have confirmed. Even the 'surprise' "I am your father" line is not a surprise anymore in the 'latest' altered version, you find that out before Darth tells Luke. Like the first guy says "you just had to be there" :)

The people that liked Star Wars were the same silly pricks that went to the movies to see " Saturday Night Fever"----------losers.
They were heart-broken when " disco ' died .

Movie making has come a long way since then. We didn't suffer from overstimulation then, so it was easy to amuse us, I guess.
