I am pregnant with my first son. Between me and my husband we have 5 girls Adriana, Naomi, Mi-Li-Nae, Jailah, Eveiah. My Husband is convinced his sons name will be King Morasha Divine. He is Muslem and is very serious about this. What do I do? I'm afraid that my son would be teased endlessly, but at the same time I want to respect my husband's religon. He WILL NOT budge on this either, I've tried for 6 months. Help!

Julie,
Actually, Divine is considered a fine name in the islamic view point as the "Divine Power of Alah" Morasha is really swahili and means Protector of Village and King is in reference to the Muslem "kingdom"

I've known a couple of men named King, but I'm a white southerner and we're pretty accepting of other people's naming conventions. I don't see any problem with King, but I wonder why you and your husband aren't considering some traditional Muslim names for the boy. King, Morasha, and Divine are none of them Muslim names, and I don't think Divine would be acceptable in Islamic etiquette.

My father grew up with a boy named King. The family was middle class, white, and protestant plus lived in a very small rural community. I don't think he had any problems with his name. At least none that I ever heard stories about. He is an elderly gentleman now and I have known him all my life. He is a very fine gentleman and a pastor, as well. I think a lot of what determines a child's teasing due to his name relates more to how he accepts it himself. If he is matter-of-fact about what his name is and is comfortable with it, he should be fine. Because I know a man named King, I don't see any problem with it.

Tell your husband that you want your baby to have a nickname to be used outside of the house... for example in school, or playdates. That way your husband can have the name he wishes, and your son won't suffer terrible teasing. If he doesn't budge, well, it looks like you'll have a son named King, won't you? Best of luck to you all.

It's not only your husband's choice you know. He doesn't have the right to "not budge." You're carrying the child, it's at the very least half your decision.

How about Rex, which is Latin for king? Or Roi, which is French for king (say it like Roy).
King is a dog's name. Poor kid.
Although Queen Latifah is doing okay.
