I think it is because most people are scared of the unknown and nothing is more unknown than death. Nobady can really tell you what happens after. I believ in God but some may not be as true to Him as they should be and thus their fear of dying.

Because they do not for sure what will happen, and they fear the worst.
Many people fear pain and agony during dying, even though most people die peacefully. They also have been frightened by the imagery and rhetoric they have experienced. Fire and brimstone preachers rant about people being consumed forever by the flames of hell, and people being thrown into a fiery cauldron. Much art from medieval times portrayed non-believers suffering unspeakable and eternal agony.
Some people are afraid of dying and no longer existing, and cannot comprehend that possibility.
Fear of death may also be a survival mechanism built into our species. If we fear death, we will go to any extreme to survive.
It is fascinating that younger people seem to fear death a lot more than older people, who are much closer to death. As we age, and see friends and many pets die, we begin to see death as a natural process, and even a way of ending the suffering and infirmity associated with aging and the dying process. Those of us who believe in a positive afterlife do not fear death so much, if at all. And even many atheists claim to have come to terms with their ultimate end.

It's the ultimate unknown, and so many people either meet violent or painful ends, at least in the media. You seldom see a story of anyone who just goes to sleep and doesn't wake up. It's either a car crash, murder, or something gory and spectacular, so people inevitably assume that all deaths are that way.
I'm not particularly afraid of dieing, as long as I have at least some decent brain function and bodily control left to me at that time, and as long as it takes its time getting here. I want to spoil a grandchild or two yet...

I am so sorry in your loss. From what you defined it feels like your cat had a thromboembolism, or a blood clot, triggered by way of center disorder (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) which lamentably is simply too natural. Many cats have this, with no need any signs, and there's not anything you might have performed to avoid it. It used to be simply unbelievably coincidental that this occurred even as as he used to be caught. This is NOT your fault, it used to be only a ticking time bomb, that could have happened regardless of wherein he used to be. I understand this normally doesnt make it less difficult to have misplaced him, however I wish it's going to aid ease any emotions of guilt you've got.

I am only afraid of leaving loved ones behind and heartbroken. If it were not for them, I would not want to be here anymore. I am not afraid of death because of various insights I have had into what happens beyond death.
I have had an NDE, and it was actually a truly beautiful experience for me as a child.

People fear death because they fear the unknown. No one who's experienced death hasn't come back and informed us whether there's a afterlife or not, so we fear death because we don't know what happens. We don't know whether there's a heaven or hell, whether we're reincarnated, or if we just decompose in the ground when we die.
