Actually, fundamentalist Christians and Muslims, as well as some extreme forms of Orthodox Judaism, all consider women as tempters and the causes of sin among men. All of those forms of the religions have concepts and principles that are intended to "protect" women and prevent men from suffering temptation.
That point of view leads to such conditions as those you cited in Saudi Arabia - but also to terrible treatment of women in fundamentalist Christian enclaves in North America, and stoning of tourist women visiting some parts of Israel if their clothing shows bared arms or uncovered hair.
The real problem lies in ancient roots of the world's societies and religions. Read "When God Was A Woman" for a very clear explanation of this background.
Narrow minds are available in every country and religion - which is one very GOOD reason to keep America as the secular nation it was created.

The Saudi royal family has long walked a thin line between catering to American oil interests, and pandering to wahabist fanatics at home. By doing so, it's retained it's political power, wealth and privilege for decades.
Part of that has been reflected in the nation's laws, which are rooted in sharia tradition, and thus ignore the progress that much of the rest of the world has made in recent centuries.

If you want to talk about absurd laws, take even a casual look at our own. Most of the world is adamantly opposed to the United States justice(?) system, both past and present. Laws which, for instance, allowed us to work our slaves to death because their skin didn't have that nice European pallor. Laws which permit us to execute innocent men & women and, in Ontario, to sentence a 14-year-old boy - Steven Truscott - to be hanged for a murder he didn't commit. Yeah, quite absurd except "absurd" isn't a strong enough word for our vicious bumbling police state.

It's absurd to us because it's a different culture. The majority of Americans DO consider this "punishment" absurd, even us liberals. It's not the way we've lived our lives and it's difficult to watch these inequities occur.
It's also very absurd and very narrow minded to state that liberals are Islamic supporters, as at least one of your answers suggests.

It says "page not found". But being an Islamic country, they feel Islam must govern every part of their law. They probably have some law that says she didn't cry loud enough for help or something.

Ultra-conservatism at its finest.
The Civil Right's movement fixed many of those situations in America, while the organization that upholds the situation is bashed as communist by right-wing fanatics.

That's why I love my country, something people from both political parties on this board seem to have forgotten how to do.
