It's the latent homoeroticism present in all superhero comics.
The bulging muscles, carefully drawn, the taut buttocks, thrusting hips, manly codpieces (or lack thereof), and fruity looking outfits all scream 'gayer than Liberace'.
Besides, if you were fighting aliens, or mutant demons, what would you wear other than tight leather and spandex?

Since they are doing stuff like flipping around and things that require great agility, the spandex is less restrictive than regular clothes.

They need their outfits to move with them in all of the compromising positions they get into- flying, metamorphosing, plasma battles, etc. And, of course, the quick changes from ego to alter-ego. Nothing says "civilian-to-super-hero-in-ten-seconds" like spandex.

Well they need to wear spandex, because spandex is always flexible, plus it lets them show off their sexy muscles, don't you think?

if they wear baggy clothes, the villain can grab them easier. also baggy clothes rip faster than spandex. who cares really? kinda nice to see a little curvage in the back if you know what i mean
