Detroit all the way. Even the Lions have shown some spark this year. And don't forget about the Shock!

Lets look at this over a 25 year period, since 1982
Detroit Championships
MLB - 1 (1984)
NBA - 3 (1988, 1989,2004)
NFL - 0
NHL - 3 (1997, 1998, 2002)
Boston Championships
MLB - 2 (2004, 2007)
NBA - 2 (1984, 1986)
NFL - 3 (2001, 2003, 2004)
NHL - 0
The two cities are evenly matched in the championship department in that time frame, just in differrent sports. Boston has won 2 world series and a superbowl however since Detroit's last title, the Pistons of 03-04, and since you play to win the game, and championships, you have to give the edge to Boston right now. Couple that with the fact that most of Detroits recent success has been with the NBA and NHL where Bostons has been with MLB and NFL and take into account that nobody cares about the NBA or NHL (NHL gets lower ratings than the MLS) I can't see how you can side with Detroit on this one. Detroit is a great sports city, and the baseball and football team are clearly on the rise, but they need to win something first before they can be called the #1 sports city

Overall Detroit has recently been better in hockey and basketball, and Boston has been better in baseball and football.
The Red Wings are unquestionably better than the Bruins, and have been so for several years. However I don't agree that the Bruins haven't been good in 25 years.
Granted, they haven't won a Cup in that time (their last was in 1972), but they did have some good teams in the last quarter century.
They finished first in their division 7 times, with over 100 points each time. They were in the Cup finals in 1988 and 1990, but lost to Edmonton both times.
I will agree though that the Bruins have been one of the worst teams in the league in the post-lockout years.

even though i live in NYC and hate boston with a passion, they are the better sport city. the red sox are better than the tigers, and always have been. even though the pistons have ben really good the past years, the celtics franchise is alot better and has a better team this year. the pats have been better than the lions the last decade, and probably will be for the next years to come. the only thing is that the boston bruins havent been REALLY good, and the red wings have been one of the best teams in the past years.
all in all, boston is the better sport city than detroit, player wise and team-franchises wise

We must have different definitions of "landslide."
Boston - Red Sox just won their second world series in 4 years (the Tigers won their last in 1984.)
-Patriots have won 3 Super Bowls this decade, and are clearly the best team this season (the Lions have never won a Super Bowl.)
-Celtics have the most NBA Championships (16) and are 8-1 this year.
-Bruins - Obviously the Red Wings are a better franchise.
I'll give you 1 out of the 4 major sports - if there's a landslide here, it HAS to go to Boston.
Championships:
Boston - 16 nba, 7 mlb, 3 nfl, 5 nhl = 31 titles
Detroit - 3 nba, 4 mlb, 0 nfl, 10 nhl = 17 titles
.

having the best teams (Boston now clearly) doesn't mean it's the best sports town. Philly folks are truly fanatic and loyal; but also negative and hateful.
Boston people are a lot like that. They'll kill players who don't live up to expectations and live and die with their teams.
It's apathy that makes for a poor sports town. Bad ownership can do that more than anything. In Boston, the Bruins have killed their relationship with the fans - who used to be rabid for the B's - due to Jeremy Jacobs incompetence (Bourque, Thornton)
But the rest of the pro teams are keeping it going.

Well just based solely on the team success from each city, it's so close and you really couldn't go wrong.
In the recent history, though, I'd go with Boston because of the Patriots and Red Sox. The Lions have been awful for a while and the Tigers didn't become successful til a couple yrs. ago and still haven't won a championship.

Overall, I think it is a very close call, but you have to give it to Boston based on recent history. If Detroit starts winning a bunch of titles across different sports again, then it would be up for debate.
For now, it's Boston.
