sqrt(-49) is not 7! Keep that in mind.

sqrt(-49) = 7i and sqrt(-8) = sqrt(8)i
so,
sqrt (-49) - sqrt (-8)= 7i - sqrt(8)i = ( 7-sqrt(8) ) i = 4.172 i , where i is the imaginary number.

16-3/4 = 64/4 - 3/4 = 61/4

I believe they are looking for the answers.

The square root of (-49) minus the square root of (-8) =

7 - 2.828427 = 4.171573

and the second question =

16 - 3/4 = 16 - .75 = 15.25

factor out the complex portion,

sqrt(-1) * (sqrt(49) - sqrt(8)) = 4.17i
