to follow any law in this universe you would have to choose between:
1-Following it because you are afraid from the consequences if you did not ie when you prey for god because you are AFRAID from going to hell
2-Following it because you are willing to enjoy the outcomes of it. ie when you prey for god because you are LIKE him and you wish to be granted in the end from him.
Which person are you? did you ever think about this in your everyday situations for example when you do not bypass the red lights in traffic because you are afraid from paying the penalty or because you like the order?

There is a third rule you forgot to mention wich applies to all serious matters, not just trivial every day situations.

We obey the rules becasue we are compelled to do so.

We have no say in when we are born or when do we die, we have no say in obeying the laws of physics (ie gravity, time and space). We have no say in obeying the rules of ageing and growing old etc etc...

It is the eternal question of whether mankind has the power to free choice or not مسير أم مخير

So your two options would realy apply if man was completely free to make his choices.

To answer your question; I'm a mixture of all three, aren't we all? Sometimes I obey the law in search of a reward, some other times I do it to escape punishment, but most of the time I obey it becasue I'm complelled to do so and has no other real alternatives.

any thing concerning human behaviours or motivation is somehow complicated. you cann't say i 've done this because i am either afraid of punishment or i want the reward. in fact, it's a mixture of both. Al Qur'an says يدعوننا خوفا و رهبا ‏. but the more u stick to the rules, the more u find u r doing this for the reward mostly and the more u break it, the punishment fear will take the upper hand.

I follow laws because I do not conflict. We all have laws.
Laws and rules in our family life growing up so that everyone can get along,
Rules and laws in schools, so that our lessons are prepared and thing run smoothly,
Law and regulations in our jobs, so that production is good and goals can be fulfilled.
Laws in our daily lives so that traffic runs smoothly, criminals are put in jail, thieves are caught and punished.

And of course many OF THESE LAWS originated with our bibles regardless of the religion. Common sense says to treat your fellow man with love and respect, don't steal, don't covet, live your life so that you respect yourself.

I am the first type. Honestly I follow the rules because I don't want to deal with the consequences.

i follow the law because i love God and want Him to be pleased with me.
i want to go to Heaven, so i do what i have to do out of love of God.
about not breaking the traffic lights or rules, i do that for two reasons:
i m in the habit of obeying rules.
i seek my security , i dont want to drive on and collide with a car or hit a pedestrian.

Well to me running a red light has nothing to do with God.

As for things like obeying the law that says not to commit murder. Well that has nothing to do with a fear of God or punishment. It has to do with me not wanting to kill someone.

I don't run red lights because I don't want to die....... You see when it is a red light that means cars will be driving on the perpendicular street because the light is green for them. I guess you don't have this problem because you ride camels
