Recently, I went to court on a traffic violation. During the trial, the officer played the video of him pulling me over and me disputing the ticket with him. While I disagree with the circumstances that led to the ticket, I can agree that I was wrong to have an angry outburst. Should I write a letter of apology to the officer or just let it go?

If you feel sorry and it's bothering you, send the letter.

Yes, I think this is a perfect situation for a letter of apology. Letters are good at times like this because you can take the time to choose your words carefully and make sure you say all the things you want to express and to say them clearly. They are also good for the recipients because they can choose the time to read them and they can take the time to reflect on what was said. Face to face or phone often doesn't work as well because people go off on tangents and let their emotions take over their mouths. Just write down everything you're thinking and want to say to them. Don't worry about the order or even about it making sense right away. Just get it all down and then edit it like crazy until it's as close to how you really feel as you can get. Also try to avoid justifying yourself. Just apologize sincerely, don't argue on your own behalf, no matter how tempting that might be. Good luck. I hope it all works out for you.

I see the reasoning of everyone else, but I'd run it past your lawyer to make sure you are not admitting guilt to anything you weren't charged with (yet!), or testifying admitting that part of your testimony was false or perjured.

None of that could turn out good for you.

Maybe best to confess it to your spiritual advisor, or find it in your heart to realize no one is perfect and this was one of your days.

Send the letter, it will make you feel better that you came to terms with him and put it behind you both, but I am sure your not the first to get angry at him.

I agree with David. He will be stunned and i'm sure happy to get an apology. He's only human.

If it makes you feel better, sure. It'll shock the crap out of him and it may just make him go easier on you if he pulls you over again.
