Seeing as mileage is a large factor in the depreciation of the value of a vehicle, you may well be better off with the rental!
You are talking about paying 10.6 cents per mile, for the rental, and the average depreciation on a newer car is about 12-15 cents per mile!
The average cost of an oil change is about $30 so you will also be using 1/2 of that in 1500 miles (assuming that you change the oil every 3000 miles)!
You also have to consider the fact that if the rental has a problem, the rental car company will replace the car for you. If your car has a problem, you will be stranded away from home, and have to wait on the repairs!
In this case, I would rent the car. You have fewer worries, and will actually be financially ahead.
Check with your insurance company to see what coverages you have, so you do not end up buying more than you need from the rental company!!

If it is just one trip, I am not sure it makes a big difference. However it do this lots, it might be better to rent. Saving 4000 to 5000 miles a year will reduce you maintenance and increase the value of you car when you sell it.
Plus if you can rent something with much better gas mileage than you current car, you may not spend as much! If your normal car get 15 mpg and your rental gets 20mpg, you could save 25 gallons. At $3 thats $75 making the rental only $85.
Have fun.

Or maybe you've forgotten how friggin' expensive gas is these days? Are you sure you can't find a rental that gets way better mileage than your own wheels? That's really about the only true savings - 'cause you'll be required to pay for insurance on the rental, and most of 'em tack on a surcharge for "excess mileage" (your rental contract will specify how many miles is considered "normal usage"). So even though you're not paying maintenance, you're still encountering many charges similar to what it'd cost to use your own vehicle. You ARE avoiding depreciation on your car if you choose a rental.
There are, as I'm sure you're beginning to realize, positive aspects to either option. Me - I'd go for the higher-mileage rental 'cause my big van only gets 17 MPG at best. And at $3.25/gallon as of this morning, I'd save a hunk of change on a 1500-mile trip.
