Yun is essentially right with a couple of important errors. When the division happened, it was never intended to be political or lasting. It was a military matter that decided who would accept the surrender of Japanese forces where.
The major error that the US made was they chose the 38th parallel, a line the Russians had earlier suggested to the Japanese as a dividing line of Korea. Japan refused and fought a war over the matter, winning handily. The Americans were unaware of this when they proposed the line to the Soviets. The Soviets accepted the plan in part as a final kick in the pants to Japan.
The two Koreas were supposed to have a joint election for their government. When the US started trying to set up the election the Soviets refused to allow the North to participate. The South then had their own election and north Korea followed suit. That is how they became two separate nations. Looking at the political landscape in the late 40's, I would put even money on the whole peninsula electing a communist government in a free election.
When the North invaded the South on June 25, 1950 the US had some military advisors still in Korea. The US quickly rallied the UN and, with certain other countries boycotting, were quickly able to get a resolution calling for UN involvement to stop the aggressive action.
The US had already started forming the domino theory and were concern about a potential jumping point for an attack on Japan.
The US did achieve its pre-combat goals. It kept South Korea from becoming communist and also protected Japan.
In fact, Korea was seen as such a success against communism that it was a direct factor in deciding to send troops to Vietnam.

The aims of the US in Korea were fairly simple.
We entered the war looking to defend our allies. With the division of Korea, it was expected that the Communist side would be defended by the communist powers in the event of an attack on them, the same was true of the non-communist side. When the Communist North Korea attacked South Korea and took most of the country, we knew we had to go help the South. It was, in essence, the duty of the US to protect the South from the north since we were part of the process that split the two.
After the war began we pursued the objective of taking the North so that the South could be safe. We figured that the North's aggression justified us stopping them from being a threat again.
Then the Chinese came in on the side of the North when we had almost won. The war then became a battle to hold onto the South again. Unfortunately McArthur was probably right and we should have taken the gloves off with China too, and maybe we would have won.
In the end we managed to stabalize the front long enough for an armistice to be signed and the demilitarized zone established.
Did we achieve our aims? The first and last, yes, but we never removed the North from being a threat. If you want to know if we won, just ask the South Koreans, they love us. They wrote a symphony about the war that glorifies the Americans fighting for them (it begins with a large drum piece that symbolizes and sounds like the arrival of the American helicopters delivering troops for the offensive).

the introduction of North Korea coming up a missile which could hit the U. S. is profoundly significant. the form of the missile variations the way the U. S. would desire to plot for the prospect that North Korea would desire to actual launch a number of of on the U. S.. the hot plan would desire to evaluate what the U. S. could do if a nuclear attack got here from North Korea. i can allow you recognize that it fairly is quite in all probability that the U. S. could launch a important retaliatory strike designed to thoroughly wreck North Korea. Now China is standard with of what the hot threat would desire to intend to its protection concern besides. They understand that the U. S. would desire to respond with an entire scale nuclear retaliation against North Korea that would desire to be an attack on China besides. the U. S. anticipates the potential of chinese language intervention and realizes it would hit China besides as North Korea to circumvent the chinese language from launching an attack on the U. S. first. Its no longer complicated, if this u . s . is attacked even in the final way you defined somebody is going to pay and in the confusion it could no longer rely in case you pulled the set off or no longer. purely being in the neighbor hood would be sufficient reason. i desire you will see why countries like North Korea and Iran won't be able to be allowed to be able to start a international nuclear replace.
