Recently the rate of race based hate crimes has gone up (in the last year). What do you think is to blame for it? Can we just learn to recognize our differences (not ignore them) and appreciate each other for them? Maybe even love each other for them?

Colorblindness is not working. We need to SEE each other for who we really are and embrace the things that make us different.

Holla if ya hear me!

Holla! I agree with you 100%...but I can't help but wonder if the rise in hate crimes is because of the number of people who are reporting things as hate crimes, incidents that would've been ignored or blown off 20 to 30 years ago? Nowadays, people are much quicker to call other folks out on slurs and whatnot...when back in the day many of us were taught as children "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never harm me..."

Another reason for the rise in hate crimes? Maybe it's also tied into the general tendency for people to just be mean and nasty nowadays (and wanting to play the dozens)...that, along with a rebellion in society against what some perceive as forced "political correctness." It's like some folks who normally wouldn't dream of making sexist/agist/racist comments have now taken on an attitude "no one's gonna tell ME what to think/do/say/feel" and then spurred on by the likes of Don Imus, Dog, Ann Coulter and other media figures...go out of their way to be as vicious and nasty to others as possible.

I don't think today's brand of racism is so much ignorance...after all we've had 40 years worth of civil rights, affirmative action, diversity training and none of it seems to be working...in fact, it seems racial hostility on ALL sides has gotten a lot worse...it is a personal choice to hate someone because of a need to feel superior to someone else. This seems to be endemic in all areas of life, not just race issues. I don't know...it just seems to me that people are just gettiing meaner and ruder in general...and also very hypersensitive at the same time.

Of course, the internet doesn't help either with the anonymity it affords haters, either. I wonder how many of the people who write outrageous comments here would do so if they were required to put their REAL names and addresses here lol?

well, there it is FWIW

HOLLA! TOTALLY HEARING YOU!

And totally loving a few of the answers given thus far (such as poetica's and badkitty's answers). So I'll skip giving a detailed response and simply say ditto to them.

I agree with you about being colorblind. There's no way that colorblindedness could ever work since it's impossible to truly be colorblind. Of course, I can't understand why anyone would even WANT to be colorblind and miss out on all the positive experiences that celebrating our differences can bring us.

You are right... We really do need to recognize and appreciate our differences. They will continue to exist regardless. Why not embrace them and cherish them for how special they are?

It has to change. Its very sad. Racism cannot and should not and will not be tolerated. Its ruining the USA and it is bringing the country down in the eyes of the world. I think racially based hate crimes are alot better then years ago BUT there has been a rise and there is a rise in lack of empathy and sympathy and love. People have become aggressive and blame everyone else for their problems. Till the day comes when we realize we re all in the same pot of soup people will continue to allow resentment hate intolerance to take them over. God help us all for the crimes some have committed towards other people.

There is no one factor to blame, but our media/government is fueling the fire. Its true, certain crimes of yesterday are considered hate crimes today, but the tolerance of the crimes has been profitable to someone.

Hate crimes, racism, and being politically correct are what they are, because the band-aids put in place after the Civil War are no longer working. I have said this before, our country had never taken real steps to intergrate us as a society after at the end of the Civil War, the so-called abolishment of slavery, soveriegn Indian nations, womens suffrage, civil rights movement, affirmitive actions, etc.... All we have ever had in place is band-aids in the form of Constitutional Amendments and Executive Orders.

After 142 years its getting tougher for the government to insult our intellegence. Not declaring hate groups domestic terrorists is a crime being committed by the government, but how do we punish Uncle Sam?

Not to attack whites, but a food for thought about our government, "if the KKK was a Black, Hispanic, Asian, Jewish, Muslim, or lead by violent women would this country still allow these organizations still exist after 141 years? What if the KKK reconciled with blacks and allowed us to join and help fight there cause against everyone else, would the organization last?

Remember, England abolished slavery 79 years before America and made steps to make those free equal part of their society which is why black Brits call themselves British and American Blacks call ourselves African American, at least for this week! As far as I am concerned we are no better off today then we were 400 years ago. The most progressive nation in the world can't get the simpliest thing rite.

Absurd and unconstitutional. Who cares why you dedicate against the law, if truth be told you dedicated the crime. Lets simply attention on truly deterrent to committing crime within the first location. Start placing criminals in jail for the highest sentence the primary time whenever. Use the dying penalty whenever it's to be had. Make jail again right into a terrible location to be alternatively of an afternoon camp.

I don't think there's a big surge. The media is to blame for sentationalizing everything and making national news out of every single incident. In reality, the number of race based hate crimes is very small.

Race-bating and media sensationalism. And the fact that too many people expect the government to deal with what really amounts to isolated personal incidents. If someone says or does something nasty to you, then DEAL WITH IT like an adult. Continuing to feed the current wave of media-manufactured hysteria does nothing but make black people look bad.

I hear you. Blindness, literal or figurative, is never a good thing. 2Corinthians 4:4 says "The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."
This god, Satan the Devil, is also the ultimate cause of all racism and hate.

The economy. The poorer people get, the more like animals they become. They tend to group themselves into gangs for survival.
