I don't think the Republicans hate taxes as much as they hate what they view as unequal sharing of the tax burden. Their view is that everyone should have a fair share of the tax burden. The Democrats believe that those that can afford to pay taxes should pay more.
The Republicans were also once very much against big government (this changed dramatically beginning with the Reagan presidency and continuing into this President Bush). Republicans want the essentials that only a government can supply (police, fire, military), but they are against social welfare programs like social security, medicare, medicade, etc. However, if they paid into the programs then they should be able to use them. Their belief is that everyone should be able to take care of themselves.

Ok, I'm not a true Republican(I will vote for a Democrat--It they are a conservative one. Damn hard to find these days) so I can't say for certain.
I'm not sure Republicans are totally against taxes. I do think any of the things taxes give is are good. What the Republicans 'hate' is the 35% of every tax dollar being spent on Buracracy the Democrats are so proud of.
You see your average Republican wants to spend the money at the lowest level possible. If it can be taken care of at City level, do it there. If it needs to go to the Country level, do it there. If it needs State level action, do it there. Don't send money to the Federal level unless it's going to benefit EVERYONE. Why? Because once it gets there much of it gets wasted. National Defence, that is something that does benefit everyone. Medicare and medicade, those are benevolence programs.
Why shouldn't your father-in-law try to qualify for a program? It's probably his money that paid for it in the first place. A Democrat would do it in a heartbeat and never give it a second thought.
Why are you asking the question in here. The person you should really be asking is your father-in-law. He would probably tell you in detail why far better than I ever could. Who knows then you could come here and say,"A republican I know said this----- Do you agree?" Much better question.

maybe because that tax goes right to the government who spends way too much money. also i would like to keep the money i work hard for. if you have the easiest job and make small amounts of money and your friend has a very demanding job then he deserves more money than you. he works harder and.there for deserves better pay that should not be cut out by a large amount of tax that will just go to some @$$ hole on welfare that wants to sit around and do nothing all day (not to say all people abuse welfare that way but many do) and the idea of high tax % to make people more "equal" is basically socialist. so go live in a socialist country if that is what you like

Two Reasons;
1)The desire for smaller govt (something the GOP has failed miserabley at). The idea is that if you strangle gov't revenues you'll have to bring down gov't spending by getting rid of govt agencies (specifcally Dept of Human Services (particularly entitlement programs), EPA, OSHA or nearly all agencies FDR brought into existence). Unfortunately most govt's do not have a cap on borrowing, so "tax & spend" gets replaced with "borrow & spend".
2)Lower taxes encourages economic growth.

Talk to a tax attorney. These idiots on here spouting off on how the wealthy don't pay are flat out wrong. Anyone who makes over 100K gets nailed. That's a fact.

Police and fire do not come from what we pay into the fed. Freeway funds come from fuel taxes and heavy use road taxes imposed on commercial vehicles primarily.
less than 3% of welfare and medicade benefits are actually paid to families who NEED them. The Social Security program has failed miserably and has been broke for nearly 30 years!
I won't presume to speak for ALL conservatives so this is MY opinion. The federal government is using OUR money to usurp OUR rights and our STATE'S rights and to adversely impact OUR ability to educate our children, protect our families and succeed in our businesses, expand THEIR police powers to punish honest, hardworking Americans and do nothing to enhance OUR safety or security or control crime!
I want to be left alone to provide for and protect my family and provide for my own future. I want to keep the money I earn for this purpose.
Federal taxes for operating the government and the military and regulation of interstate commerce and protecting our borders is fine.
State and local taxes to provide fire, police, education and other services to which I have access is fine.
I'm solidly in the middle of the "middle class" and pay well over 55% of my income to the federal government. THEN I get to pay state taxes and all the other taxes for local services. Which brings my total to around 68% of my gross income going to TAXES!
How much is too much???

Republicans hate taxes based on what the money goes for. They want to pick and choose where THEIR tax dollars go. Well hell, don't we all? What gets me are the ones that are not well off but complain about social programs. They do not stop to think what would happen if they became disabled. You think they would not fight to get their DESERVED check that they hate so much now? Of course they would. Their opinion of those lazy bastards on government welfare would change if they became one.

It's a classic contradiction in politics. No one wants to give anything TO the government, but everyone wants something FROM it.
Really, it's human nature to want the most for nothing - they see it as giving their money to the government to spend instead of spending it how they want. Why should someone else control their funds? If they want nicer roads, schools, healthcare, they can keep their tax money and just pay for it.
But I agree with you, that they are very contradictory in this logic. Some Republicans (mostly Libertarians) actually avoid governement-sponsored benefits when they can in order to support their beliefs (Ron Paul for example). However, the majority follow in the same path as your father in law.
Maybe you should ask him that question - he might not like it, but who knows it might get him to think about it a little.

Taxes stifle economic growth.
Democrats tend to raise taxes, try to provide more government services, and in the end, drive the economy down which ultimately lowers tax revenues.
You can actually increase government revenue by lower taxes which will result in a more robust economy. The Democrats typically don't have the patience to it.

Yukon...Fire your CPA or hire one to begin with. I've had an extra $600+ back from Federal every year since the Bush Tax Cuts went into play. I'm not even in close to "wealthy".
The concept of cutting taxes is to stimulate commercial production and investments...which inturn increases revenue because the consumers and CEO's spend their extra money instead of hoarding it.
