It sounds like she needs to talk to a counselor. She may be having trouble coping with her father's absence. She may be having trouble coping with her father's military situation because of things she may be hearing on the news or at school.
This doesn't sound like the normal attention-getting scheme many children come up with. It sounds more serious.
Even if it turns out to be just a lack of coping mechanisms in dealing with stress, it could lead to something more damaging if your friend doesn't take her to a doctor or counselor.

The child could be suffering from separation anxiety or a lot of other things , get to a psychiatrist asap. If it's her heart and not her head "telling" her to do these things, that's good because if she's hearing voices it could be even more serious. Then again it could be nothing but seeking attention.

I would talk to the child's pediatrician about it. It could just be a bid for attention or it could be serious. A professional needs to decide that.

It sounds like she is trying to get attention from her parents. She needs to sit down with her daughter and tell her that if she keeps saying things like this she will have to take her to the doctor. Sometimes telling kids that a trip to the doctor is necessary gets them to stop bad behavior. My mom's friend did this with her 5 year-old son when he kept saying he was too sick to go to Kindergarten. As soon as she said "I guess I'll have to take you to the doctor for a shot if you are too sick to go to school." all of a sudden he felt fine.

well, i would say that the parents should have a sit-down and talk to this girl a little more about it. have them make sure that they do love her and care about her. if this persists and seems to get out of control of the girl, then she needs to get some help with this.

That's awfully strange!! Tell your friend, to tell the little girl to listen to her heart...that could hurt!!!!
And if it continues, I would absolutely take her to a professional.

When i was like 12-13 i always "had" to touch things that would hurt me because i thought if i didn't the people i loved would die.
i finally told my mom about it and she took me to a therapist. it helped, i'd do something about it.
