It is illegal and has been stolen and or used for some illegal activities. You need to get rid of it if you ever get caught with it like use it on an intruder or something many things can happen
Worst case you get charged with the crime that it was used in
Best case purchase and possession of stolen property along with owning an unlicensed firearm.
Any guns you get need to be purchased in a gun shop and be registered never buy from a friend

Look up the words "sucker" and "patsy" in the dictionary. I'd bet your picture is there.
There are simply no valid legal reasons to file off a serial number, and it takes a lot to make them totally unrecoverable.
Now, what does it tell you that the SN is obliterated?
The gun could be and probably is stolen, for one thing.
The gun could have been and probably was used in the commission of a crime.
If it's your misfortune to now be the not-so-proud owner of a murder weapon, have you got your story ready should the authorities ever find out you have it?
Let's say you sell it to someone, and they then use it in a crime or get caught with it some way, and it ultimately gets linked to a double homicide from last year, and he (naturally) gives you up as the guy who sold it to him, to prove he didn't have it and couldn't be the person that did that one.
Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?
There's no good way out of this one. Best bet, go back to the "friend" and see if you can get the money back. Short of that, toss it in a river.

Obtain proof that your purchased the firearm from the seller. If the seller is reluctant to give you a receipt, demand your money back, or let them know you will let the police find the sn for you.. You are not required to register a handgun you buy from an individual, but with the serial number filed off the police will have a reason to pursue further investigation. The serial number usually can be recovered with today's technology, and on most firearms it is stamped in several different locations. Good luck and enjoy your purchase!

Ouch! You have a hot item on your hands.

Think about this. Call the DA's office, ask them what they suggest.
A weapon with a filed serial ## is as legal as a 3 dollar bill. You want this about as much as you want a case of Herpes.
Get rid of it.

The gun is stolen and/or it has been used in a crime.
GET RID OF IT.
Just think of the "paying so much for it" as an expensive lesson. You should have known better - and now you do.

You will want to get proof of purchase from the buyer, and if he refuses threaten to go to the police with the situation.
