I do not have HD but have a great HD TV, I was wondering if xbox360 plays HD movies and does it work well and will it hurt the console?

You can download movies in HD format from Xbox live and watch them but if you want to watch HD-DVD you need the HD-DVD player attachment. It's about $180 right now and plugs in to the USB port on the back of the XBox. It won't work with Blu-Ray.

I have heard of problems with the out-board HD drive for the xbox. Because it uses a USB connection, the drive does a lossy compression to feed the xBox resulting in somewhat compromised video.

You would be better off getting a Toshiba A2 ($99 if you can still find them) or a A3 ($198) as a stand-alone player. These also come with HDMI outputs which last-years xBox 360's do not.
