strongest arm is your reason for the HOF? should Ellis Valentine be enshrined as well?

if you want to give reasons for the Hawk, it should be his 438 career HR's (mostly in the pre streoid 80's), his 300+ SB's and almost 1600 RBI.

unfortunately, injuries took their toll on the Hawk; he lost his speed and defensive prowess; and he hung around about 3-4 years too long.

also, he swung at everything - never had an OBP higher than .365 and his career year was shortened by strike (1981 - on pace for 40/40 and about 120+ RBI.

he's a borderline guy, and may get in eventually via Veteran's committee, but I'd have to vote no- If Jim Rice can't get in, neither can Dawson.

I think that he's better then some of the players already in the Hall of Fame, for instance just to name one Tony Perez, but that doesn't mean that he should get in either. He was very good for a long time, but just not quite what I would call hall of fame good either. Now if he were a non-1B IF or a C absolutely. Jim Rice who he's is often compared to also isn't a Hall of Famer but for different reasons.

Dawson good for a long time with occasional flashes of greatness (would have been more if not for the turf in Montreal)

Rice, great for a short period of time and mediocre to good for the rest of his career.

Unfortunately, his HOF plaque was probably one more casualty of that horrible turf in Montreal.

Had his knees stayed healthy, he'd be Vlad Guerrero with 30 SB speed, but by the time he got to the Cubs a third of his game was gone. He was great for the team, city and game, but so was Steve Garvey and he can't even get his number retired by his team...

it is because of the fact extremely some his numbers seem humble in assessment to the gamers who used HGH and steriods. some writers have not been clever adequate to take that into attention before. Hawk could have been interior the HOF in the 1st 4 tries on the very maximum.

I don't think it's any great miscarriage of justice that's he's not in the HOF. There are better players than Hawk who aren't in the HOF - and I suspect there will always be.

No. As the first responder said, he had a couple of super seasons, but he was not consistently the best. He doesn't compare to Jim Rice, for example. Jim put up superlative numbers year after year.

Not really, but if he ever is elected I won't have any real objections. He'd look good on a plaque but the Hall is not suffering without him.
