You can not play it free, you have to buy the discs, anything else is illegal and could get you into a lot of trouble.
Even if you borrow the disc from someone else, you still need it every time you play, and copying the disc (if you can get past the protection) would be illegal.
Anyway, the Sims 1 discs are £5 or less, so they're hardly expensive.

No, not unless you borrow the CDs from someone. If there were any way to do that, it would probably be illegal. Just buy the game. It's not that expensive anymore and it's totally worth it.

There were no demos released of the game, and anything beyond that would be software piracy and illegal. The game is inexpensive; purchase it and support the creators.
