Sure you can. I think any tree will do. When I was in Singapore I remember the Chinese make use of the grafted calamansi tree (with fruits on) as their festivity tree during Chinese New Year (which they celebrate like our Christmas).

Up here in Canada, the Spruce or Pine trees are the only outdoor trees that are green during winter, I think that's the reason why they were called "Christmas Trees". The other trees look dead because all their leaves have fallen.

In the Philippines, the trees and plants are green whole year round.
And you've got thousands of varieties and species to choose to make use as an adornment during festivities.

But commercialism has conditioned our minds that Christmas trees are only those plastic replica of the spruce or pine trees, you find in the malls.

Furthermore, Christmas Trees have a paganistic origin. And has no relation whatsoever to the real reason we are celebrating, the birth of Christ.

As for me, Christmas tree or no Christmas tree, my Christmas will still be merry as long as I am with my family, celebrating the birth of our saviour Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas to all!!!

decor & lights are the answer... if you don't put anything on or in it, then it's a plain atis tree. if you place lights with style & if you add some color, it could definitely serve as a Christmas tree!

some tips:
use light materials if you're adding anything, otherwise you'll break the branches & thus hurt the tree... if it's a tall tree, don't make use of very miniscule decor, it would look like some big dust or morning glory or Big Bird's poop on a beautiful tree. you could actually make use of light parol (Christmas star) made of plastic or anything that wouldn't look haggard after some typhoon left (hello Lando/Hagibis! hello Mina/Mitag!) and if you're using lights, make sure the wires are ok, there aren't any "pundido" lights, & switch it off when you're going to sleep. unplug. unplug before sleeping & unplug when a fire's starting! (but don't worry, the tree wouldn't be engulfed by flames easily if you'll be careful, if the weather isn't too hot & dry, if the leaves aren't dry/almost weathered, & if a lightning doesn't strike your tree.)
:)

We have an Atis tree right there beside our porch entrance. Full year this tree gives us huge fruits and lots of leaves to sweep, burn and inhale. Cheap weed, really =))

Unfortunately, this Atis doesn't have much sturdy branches to hold my Christmas lights and enough strong leaves to hold my Christmas balls and Christmas angels. And it's too high for me to perch the Christmas star on top. So I guess, I'm back to decorating the Christmas tree my parents have bought when they had their own home. That's 2 decades and a half ago. Saved my money, brings more memories =)

If you can chop it and haul it inside your quarters, then any tree could serve as your Christmas tree. Yeah, an atis tree doesn't sound so bad and the idea that the atis themselves could be the ornaments sounds practical too. After all, you're not home most of the time anyways. Now if you could only prevent those fruits from over-riping and falling off from your tree, just maybe your tree would last all season long. hahahaha Merry Christmas, luv.

Yes, you can if you add the decors and the lights but, if it stands as it is with only its fruits...no. It becomes just an ordinary "atis" tree, not Christmas tree.

Yes, you can but can you stand its smell? I think its leaves produces some smelly substance especially when your christmas lights heated...

The best replacement for Christmas tree is the Duranta plants cause it has (2) variety of leaf color which is yellow and green plus it has a small yellow fruits and a white or yellow or lavender flowers...

i think any tree would do. it's how you would decorate it, i guess. besides the christmas spirit is in our hearts not in how we dress up our homes.
