It was a decline not fall or collapse, the main reason was due to the fact that the empire was split into two therefore they didnt' have unity, secondly it was filled with corruption in the government, and lastly, they stopped conquering regions which lead to less silver import and other goods, while population increased, the value of curreny decreased and value of goods increased(it was unbalanced).

There have many volumes written about the collapse of the western roman empire. No one has ever came up with an explanation that has been accepted as definitive.

Gibbons "Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" is generally considered to offer the best explanaions, though his or greatly disputed.

The bottom line is that no one can adequately explain it.

The reasons most generally cited are:

(1) moral and economic decline of the ruling roman elite.

(2) stagnation of the economy: during the 3rd and 4th centuries, it was decreed that no one could change professions, you had to be what your father was.

(3) the invading and maurauding barbarian tribes were given command of the legions, and thus they - the legions - became ultimately the wielders of military and consequently political power, and thus the actual rulers of the empire: they deposed and chose the emperors at will.

(4) the tax system as a result broke down; roads were no longer repaird, the aqueducts ceased to function because of lack of maintenace: finally the whole infrastructure that supported the very operation of the empire just fell apart, became dysfunctional.

(5) the populace became increasingly grouped together into ever smaller and smaller units, so that the need for a centralized system became less and less meaningful.

These are only a few of the reasons for its collapse, but should be enough for you essay or paper.

It begins a little bit earlier than Constantine death. Up then, Roman Empire had reached its maximum expansion. Something like the current European Union, but after a centralized rule. So, there were no control about the periferic zones. Roman had a practical rule to colonize new territories by sending able soldiers everywhere, then giving them some soil and a place to implant farms in the newly acquired provinces. Roman soldiers. So, Rome itself was left dilapidated, and Roman soldiers in time become more Roman Settlers. They so tried drafting into the Roman Army local people, and the thing went very well, when Roman Empire was united.
Then Constantine died, the empire was divided. While the Eastern Empire turned into an Ellenistical Empire, saving itself in a very altered form, the seeds of contraddction building into the united Empire blossomed into the Western Empire. Barbarians and Outsiders started putting more pressure on the frontiers, because there were uprests in Asia and several population migrated, waging winds of war. The once proud militar supremacy of Rome had since waned, and often the occupied country had already found the way of building new, mixed civilization. With no one to defend Rome, and the frontiersmen no more interested into a Central Authorithy, Rome waned.

There is a new book out that gives political, financial, military, and sociological reasons why, beginning in AD 376, a series of events took place that caused the passing away of the Roman administration in the west by AD 476.
