To just come out and announce the theme or themes wouldn't do you or anyone any good, but think about this (assuming you've read it) Emily is an elderly woman living in the South. It is now modern times. She had kept the memory of her husband alive for years in an odd way. Why would she go to such lengths to try to keep the past alive?

Oh, this is a great American short story. Don't tell me that some HS English teacher is going to ruin it for you by making you discuss its "themes!" Well, someday you can read it again and just enjoy it for what it is.
