I usually enjoy them, most of my extended family is adult-age. So far, no little nieces or nephews yet to run around crying havoc.

We are all mostly Scandinavian descended, and so tend to be pretty nonchalant, somber folks, who don't put on angst-ridden family dramas (when people are watching.) The idea here is that misery loves company, but can't stand competition...

On the other hand, the conversation tends to be of two sorts, first, "he did this, she did that...." which repulses me.(The fact that I am on this site should tell you that I never do anything worth talking about...) Then it tends to degenerate into bantering, and telling jokes, which I am interested in,( I know lots of good engineer jokes.....)

Then the conversation slow down, and we generally stop talking to each other.

For 11 months....

I love the holiday gatherings. This year Thanksgiving is gonna really be fun.
The youngest son is making stuffing with chicken livers (all chopped up fine), tells his wife, she won't be able to taste them.
She dislikes chicken livers-and his idea-so I'll make some plain stuffing.
Oldest daughter is making the Turkey. She volunteered. Big mistake--raw xl Turkey will arrive at least 1 hour late. She is never on time.
Youngest son bakes a little but has to make at least 3 trips to Wal-Mart because he doesn't check the supplies he needs first.
Dinner is scheduled for 5PM but it will probably be at 7PM.
I'm not supposed to cook very much, only the foods they don't like, candied yams and homemade cranberry sauce.
I also get to make the deviled eggs because none of them can duplicate my recipe yet. It's in the recipe box though.

I like them. However, it hasn't been with my own family in over 30 years.

I'm usually "adopted" by someone. This year though, the meal is at my house.

With a few friends.

Peace.

I seem to recall you loathing the event. Something about a dish your mother-in-law prepares.

Kinda a double sided issue here. I like them but loathe the clean up before and after.

Love them. We will be having a huge family gathering for Thanksgiving and another one for Christmas. Should be about 45 people for Thanksgiving, and close to 80 for Christmas.

Both - I love to spend time with my siblings and my neices and nephew - but then my mother gets all stressed out around the holidays and it's difficult to handle sometimes.
