Iraq's government today said security statistics showed that Baghdad had "defeated the forces of darkness" after more than a year of sectarian warfare, and the United States said it was crucial that Iraqi leaders used the relative calm to get their political fighting under control.

The government released numbers indicating a major decline in violent attacks in Baghdad and the surrounding areas. Attacks such as bombings numbered 323 last month, compared with 850 in February when a U.S.-led security crackdown was launched, according to the government figures.

Thanks for the post! That is great news. Now, let's see how the libs spin this one to trash our government.

two things come to mind... what is an "acceptable" number of casualties for a war we should have never entered, and yay! it's only taken nearly 5 years to make the first signs of progress.... football coaches have been fired while getting more done than that.

I'm glad things are getting better for the Iraqis and our troops... but after this long and it's mediocre at best? Come on now... it's time for a change.

We are making good progress on the military front. That is great. Now that we have allowed the Iraqis to do their own thing to protect their own country. Now, how about a political settlement. Without a political settlement all of this military so called success and victory may be for naught.

This is positive news, but let's not forget that Al Sadr gave us fair warning 2 months ago that his Badr brigade is taking a 6 month hiatus. They were the ones primarily responsible for the violence. Hopefully in 4 months they will remain in cease-fire (a possibility, reports I've read, which aren't the most accurate, indicate they are somewhat scattered and in argument as to their next move). Hopefully this will give us the time to dig in, and get the political section of Iraq in better shape.

I am not a lib, but I am a Democrat and I call it great news. Don't dare assume you know what I think or feel, Rush cult member. You saying we are not happy about less deaths is just stupidity and because you keep saying it, doesn't make it true. So curl up with a good Rush Limbaugh tape and smile to yourself, knowing you and him are keeping America in line with your BS. Live in your hate filled fantasy, you are not convincing anyone of anything.

If its lasting its great news. What happens when we pull back?

Too bad we listened to Rumsfeld for all those years and kept our troop levels so low. But hey "stay the course" right?

Lets hope it is indeed true, not just a spin by Iraq's government. I have learned not to believe what any government says at face value.

great. the military has done what it said it would do.

the surge has provided cover to manage the political process on the ground in Baghdad.

congrats.

but has the political process worked? no.

will it? can it? no.

this fight in Iraq has been going on longer than the Civil War we continue to fight here in America.

This is good news for sure.

But beware, not all of it is due to success of the surge.

Al-Sadr ordered his people to stop fighting for six months starting in August. This is surely part of the reason for lower violence.

I saw an unidentified Democrat US Representative saying the victory in Iraq was bad news for the Demcrats.
So, those idiot conservatives that have been saying all along the the dems were heavily invested in the defeat of America were RIGHT ALL ALONG!

Well imagine that?
Thanks for the great question!

That's great news, time to bring our troops home immediately. What are our troops doing in the middle of a sectarian civil war?
