She keeps it since she has decided that she is the only one to brand her and the negative connotation they gave the letter is something she discards and accepts responsibility for. By the fact that she elaborately embroiders the letter on her frock she's letting them know she isn't living by their standard and ideal, but she's living by her own standards. The letter at that point has become a symbol of her strength and her determination to be herself, a unique individual walking the path god has set for her and not the path designated her by any man or woman.

She wasn't interested. The scarlet letter had become a part of her and she had come to peace with it's meanings. She tells Chillingworth that the letter will fall of it's own accord in God's time.
