B/c I read somewhere that Derek Jeter owns a property in Florida and lives in Florida, and owns an apartment in NY, but does not live there, and the source states that he does not pay NY land tax. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks!

property taxes are due in both locations, and for Mr. Jeter as well.

many local services must be provided even though no one is currently living in the property -- police and fire, for example.

thus, you pay property taxes everywhere you own property. However, you pay each jurisdiction only for the property located there. [It isn't like income tax where California taxes your income earned there and then Arizona taxes it again if you're an Arizona resident.]

You pay property tax in both locations (just like Derek Jeter does). His claim wasn't about property taxes (or land tax as you say), but about state income tax. He claims his primary residence isn't in NY, but is in FL and therefore he doesn't owe NY any income tax. NY has a state income tax and FL doesn't.

good luck!

Haven't you already been paying taxes on both properties? That's usually included in the mortgage. one property has nothing to do with the other. If the town school district and/or county all have a tax on real estate, then you pay it.

I do not think it matters where you live you have to pay land tax....If jeter lives in Florida he does not have to pay state tax out of his check which is a smart move.
