Do you prefer modern variants on old classic names? Do you like the old classic names such as Michael and Mary? Or are you someone who likes the unusual and make up your own name? Just curious.

I personally tend to like classic names and variants of classic names. I ended up naming my son Calvin. It is not so far out there of a name that people have never heard of it yet it is not very common so there wont be 5 of them in his classroom.

I tend to prefer classics, if we're generalizing, but my tastes within that genre vary.

I suppose you could say I prefer the Celtic and/or underused sort. In other words, while one certainly couldn't argue that Isabella and Aidan aren't classic, they'd still be too currently common for me, personally. But Ewan, Ronan, Milo, Harvey, Niamh, Talulla, Eleanor or Althea? Gorgeous! ;)

Calvin is wonderful, by the way! ;)

I feel like you do- there are so many classics, and all of them are very common, so you can be familiar (as opposed to odd) but still stand out in a crowd. Trendy names tend to be "dated" after a time- 25 years from now, everyone will know the majority of Madison's were born between 1995 and 2005, and that Jayden's, Kayden's, Braydon's, Aidan's, etc....
were born in 2006-2007 or till when ever that craze dies, but James, Micheal and Emily will be around for decades.

well that's hard... i like all kinds.. mainly variants of Classics Katherine instead of Catherine Maddilyn - Madeline, Madisyn - Madison, Jakob - Jacob, Ameliah - Amelia.

But there are others i like that are way out there. Wesson, Kaylara, Seralyn, Beryl.

And of course a few that are not exactly classic but maybe timeless or elaborate Maximilian, Anastasia, Tatiana, Sebastian, Lorenzo, Alexandria.

so i kinda go all different ways. one thing i know for a fact is i don't care for the ordinary or over used names. no John, Paul, Mary, or Susan. stuff like that. i don't want to burden my child with a harsh name but i want them to stand out and be able to know exactly who the teacher or Boss or whomever is talking too. i don't want the child to be like "oh man was the teacher calling me or the other Christopher M. in the class"

Cheers

I tend to go for traditional or family names with my kids. Each of our children was named after either my husband's or my family. The relatives we named them after were long passed so we wouldn't have more than one person named that particular name. The only rule we had in naming them was that the relative had to be one we enjoyed being around whose memory brought us joy.My kids names are:

Emily Elizabeth
Pilar Jacob
Catherine Priscilla

Definitely underused classics. My top names are:

Daphne
Eleanor.
Charlotte
Avery -my exception to my 'underused classic' theme
Louisa

Theodore
James
William
Deacon -my other exception
Henry -but I can't use it.

I know that except for Avery and James, they're very likely to be the only one in their class, but people aren't going to scrunch their faces up and go, "how on earth do you pronounce that?"

I would have to agree with you, rarely do I care for the unusual names, often I just end up feeling bad for the child given the name.

Generally I prefer more traditional names, but I like them to be ones that you don't hear all that often.

Example: I would prefer Willem or Julian for a boy, not David or Jacob. I would prefer Penelope or Nadia for a girl, not Emily or Heather.

I tend to like a variety of names some common, so uncommon and a few made up ones with special meaning.

I named my first son Jonathon, which is very common. But I named my second son Ian (very uncommon) and my youngest son Raiden, which is almost unheard of. So after my oldest, I went for original. Best of luck!

I like all "types" of names.. but I tend t more unique names when it comes to my own kids :) My oldest daughter is Avianna, usually not heard of & my second daughter is Adisynn, becoming more popular but it was my husband's choice so I threw a unique speliing on it! We paln on having one more child.. if it's a girl her name will be Alaura Jordyn & if it's a boy his name will be Kohen Bradley...
